DAVIS, Calif. – Back-to-back first half goals gave the Northeastern Field Hockey team all of the ammunition it needed for a 3-0 rout of UC Davis in the season opener on Friday afternoon.
Â
Natalie Stewart and
June Curry-Lindahl netted Northeastern's first and second goals of the season within two minutes of each other to give the Huskies a 2-0 halftime lead while
Jamie Bartucca added some breathing room in the second half for the Huskies.
Â
Stewart finished the game with two shots, and connected on her lone shot on goal in the game.
Kellie Stigas led the team with four shot attempts while
Kristin Abreu tallied three shots, two on goal and an assist.
Â
Becky Garner finished the game with four saves which moves her into a tie for fourth place with Danielle Butsch on the Northeastern all-time saves list with 327.
Â
UC Davis was led by Augustina Singh who had four shots on the night while Chelsea Bigelow made two saves, while allowing two goals in the first half.
Â
The Huskies started the scoring, getting on top midway through the first half with Stewart's goal.
Â
Stewart, a west coast (of Canada) native, played the ball towards the cage where the UC Davis netminder kicked it back out into play. The senior chased down her own rebound and beat Bigelow to the lower right side from about eight yards out for the Huskies first goal of the season.
Â
Just over two minutes later, Curry-Lindahl added to Northeastern's total with a goal of her own in the 30
th minute of action. The sophomore scooped up the rebound of
Kristin Abreu's try and beat the goalie to the right from point blank range.
Â
Northeastern added to its lead in the second half when
Jamie Bartucca netted her first career goal off of a
Laura MacLachlan rebound midway through the second half. The junior scooped up the initial save of MacLachlan's shot and flicked it into the back of the cage from point blank range to give the Huskies a three-goal lead.
Â
The victory was Northeastern's first in a season opener since a 2-1 OT victory over Monmouth to kick off the 2013 season.
Â
The Huskies will return to action on Sunday, August 28 at 5 p.m. when they head to Berkeley, Calif. for a meeting with Cal.Â
