BERKELEY, Calif. –
Natalie Stewart knocked in a penalty corner attempt dished in from
Alyssa Carlson 10 minutes and 36 seconds into overtime to give the Huskies a 3-2 victory over California Sunday afternoon in Berkeley.
Â
Both of Stewart's goals this season have represented the game-winner.
Â
The Huskies, who forced the overtime period thanks to a
Laura MacLachlan goal with no time on the clock in regulation, tallied their third penalty corner goal of the game on Stewart's shot to come away from their California trip with a 2-0 record to start the season.
Â
Northeastern (2-0) took 12 penalty corners on the day, while the Golden Bears (0-1) attempted none. MacLachlan led the Huskies with five shots on the day, all on goal, capitalizing when the Huskies needed her most.
Â
The Huskies are now 2-0 to begin the season for the first time since the 2012 season where they beat Louisville and Northwestern to start off the year en route to a 6-0 start to that year.
Â
The Huskies got on top first for the second-straight game as
Kristin Abreu knocked in her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner. With
June Curry-Lindahl inserting, Abreu took the direct pass and sent it into the back of the goal to put Northeastern up 1-0.
Â
Melina Moore evened things up for Cal in the second half sneaking one past
Becky Garner off of a pass from Nicole Henriksson to make it one-all. Janaye Sakkas put the Golden Bears on top for the first time in the game at 56:30 giving Cal a 2-1 advantage.
Â
With no time left on the clock and a penalty corner opportunity to tie it, or head on home, MacLachlan flipped a shot to the left of the goalkeeper off of an insert from Curry-Lindahl to force extra time.
Â
After dropping down to seven players for the overtime period, Carlson got put on inserting duty and sent a shot to Stewart who popped it in for her second goal of the season, and the Huskies third penalty corner goal of the game.
Â
Northeastern will head back to the east coast where next weekend they will face off against crosstown rival Boston University at New Balance Field on BU's campus Friday, September 2 at 6 p.m.
