Garner postgame interview
DEDHAM, Mass. – Three different Huskies registered a goal as
Becky Garner made nine saves between the posts in Northeastern field hockey's 3-1 victory over New Hampshire Sunday afternoon.
Â
The three Js,
June Curry-Lindahl,
Jamie Bartucca, and
Jessica Unger, recorded goals on the day for Northeastern (5-4). The goals were the fifth of the season for Curry-Lindahl and Bartucca, while Unger notched her second goal of the season, a career-best for the defender.
Â
Garner finished the day with the near shut out, but instead came away with nine saves, matching her season-high set yesterday against No. 19 Maine.
Â
Both teams tallied 17 shots on the day, 10 of them coming on goal. The difference maker were penalty corner opportunities, of which the Huskies had six, to UNH's two during the game.
Â
Northeastern is now 5-2 on the season while scoring first, and 2-2 at Dedham Field.
Â
Northeastern got on top first for the seventh time this season in the sixth minute of play as Curry-Lindahl tallied her fifth goal of the season to give Northeastern a 1-0 advantage early on.
Â
Curry-Lindahl, who has now registered a point in six-straight games, has also notched a goal in four of Northeastern's last five matches.
Â
After Curry-Lindahl's initial try on Northeastern's penalty corner didn't go, Stigas scooped up the rebound and dished it back out to Curry-Lindahl on the baseline, where she deked past a defender and slipped one along the baseline and past the right-side of the UNH goalkeeper for the score.
Â
Bartucca added to the Huskies lead midway through the second half, notching her third goal of the weekend and fifth of the season in the 51st minute.
Â
Bartucca started the goal-scoring opportunity by sacrificing her shins on a hard pass by UNH, deflected the pass, and forced the Wildcats to send it out of bounds.
Kristin Abreu started things back up on the pitch, dribbling up the right side and shooting a centering pass across the circle right to Bartucca who was ready and waiting for the goal.
Â
The Huskies added an insurance goal in the 59
th minute as Unger notched her second goal of the season, this one coming off of a perfectly set up penalty corner. After Bartucca drew the corner,
Axelle Dewamme sent in a pass to
Natalie Stewart who kicked it wide to Unger who then slammed it home.
Â
The assist was the sixth of the season for Stewart and the first career point for the rookie Dewamme.
Â
UNH got one back late into the game as Ashley Mendonca cut right up the middle of the field, into the circle and backhanded one into the goal to tally one on the scoreboard for the visitors, though the Huskies hung on to the 3-1 victory.
Â
Northeastern will begin CAA play on Friday night at Drexel when they face the Dragons in a 7:30 p.m. game in Philadelphia. After Friday's game, Northeastern begins another three-game homestand at Dedham Field starting with Sunday's game against Dartmouth at 2 p.m. on Community Day at Dedham Field.
