BOSTON – The Northeastern women's hockey team will raise the curtain on its 37th varsity season this weekend with a pair of home games against St. Lawrence on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
COYNEÂ TOÂ BEÂ HONOREDÂ PRE-GAME
Prior to Friday's regular season opener, alumna
Kendall Coyne will be honored in a pre-game ceremony to celebrate her 2016 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award honor. Coyne led the NCAA in goals (50), goals per game (1.35), points per game (2.27), shorthanded goals (5) and hat tricks (5) last season en route to earning First Team AHCA All-America honors and the 2016 Cammi Granato Award for the WHEA Player of the Year. Coyne is the second player in program history to win the Patty Kazmaier Award (given to the top player in Division I women's ice hockey), joining 2002 recipient Brooke Whitney.Â
NICEÂ SEEINGÂ YOUÂ AGAIN
The Huskies and Saints will rekindle an old ECAC rivalry this weekend. The teams were both official members of the conference from 1996-01, during which time Northeastern won seven of 10 matchups against St. Lawrence. The Huskies own a 24-10-1 edge in the all-time series vs. the Saints, however, SLU has won seven of the last nine meetings overall. This will be the second straight season that the Huskies and Saints have squared off to open the year; last season NU earned a win (9-5) and a tie (2-2) at St. Lawrence to open the campaign. Northeastern is 23-7-6 all-time in season openers.
LAST TIME VS. ST. LAWRENCE
Northeastern opened the 2015-16 campaign with a 2-2 tie against St. Lawrence on Sept. 26, 2015 as
Kendall Coyne and
Shelby Herrington lit the lamp for NU. The next day, the Huskies' offense exploded in a 9-5 victory over the Saints. Coyne notched a hat trick as part of a four-point game, while
Denisa Krizova and
Kasidy Anderson each recorded a goal and two assists. Anderson was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week in Hockey East the following day.Â
WHENÂ THEÂ SAINTSÂ COMEÂ MARCHINGÂ IN
After posting a 17-15-6 record last season, St. Lawrence was tabbed seventh out of 12 teams in the 2016 ECAC preseason coaches' poll. Four of the Saints' five top scorers return from last season, including forward Brooke Webster, who led the squad with 37 points a year ago. Like Northeastern, St. Lawrence also played an exhibition game against a Canadian opponent last weekend as the Saints fell to McGill, 3-0, at Appleton Arena.Â
HUSKIESÂ TOPÂ TORONTOÂ INÂ EXHIBITION
NU opened the 2016-17 season in winning fashion with a 3-0 victory over the University of Toronto in exhibition play on Sept. 23 at Varsity Arena. Senior
Hayley Masters, freshman
Codie Cross and senior
Hayley Scamurra scored for the Huskies, while goaltenders
Sarah Foss (2 saves),
Brittany Bugalski (5 saves) and
Brianna Storms (2 saves) combined for the shutout. The Huskies scored two power-play goals and held the Varsity Blues to just nine shots on goal, while firing 31 shots at the Toronto net.Â
NUÂ TABBEDÂ THIRDÂ INÂ WHEAÂ PRESEASONÂ POLL
For the sixth consecutive season, the Huskies were projected to finish third in the Hockey East preseason coaches' poll. Boston College and Boston University edged NU for spots one and two, respectively, while Connecticut was tabbed fourth. New Hampshire and Vermont tied for fifth in the poll, while Providence, Maine and Merrimack rounded out spots 7-9.Â
HUSKIESÂ RANKEDÂ INÂ BOTHÂ NATIONALÂ POLLS
The Northeastern women's hockey team came in at No. 9 in the country in both preseason national polls. Northeastern is one of three Hockey East schools ranked in the preseason top-10, joining No. 3 Boston College and No. 10 Boston University. Wisconsin was picked No. 1, just ahead of WCHA rival and defending national champion Minnesota at No. 2. Quinnipiac (No. 4) and Clarkson (No. 5) rounded out the top five, while North Dakota, Princeton and Colgate filled slots six through eight, respectively.
NINETEENÂ LETTERWINNERSÂ RETURN
The Huskies welcome back 19 letterwinners to the 2016-17 squad, including captains
Ainsley MacMillan and
Sarah Foss, and alternate captains
Paige Savage and
Melissa Haganey. Fifteen of NU's 17 goal-scorers from 2015-16 remain on the roster as well, including second-year forward
Denisa Krizova, who led all NCAA sophomores with 59 points in 2015-16.
FRESHMANÂ FIVE
Northeastern will welcome five talented freshmen to the mix in
Paige Capistran (defenseman),
Bailey Coyne (forward),
Codie Cross (defenseman),
Matti Hartman (forward) and
Andrea Renner (forward). Both Coyne and Cross got on the scoresheet in the exhibition game at Toronto on Sept. 23. Coyne set up
Hayley Masters' game-winning goal in the first period, while Cross blasted home a power-play goal in the second period.Â
