NEWARK, Del. – Despite a 28-point effort by
T.J. Williams, the Northeastern men's basketball team fell 69-62 Thursday night, on the road, to Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
Williams' 28-point game marked his 12
th 20-point effort of the season, tying the most through 19 games since J.J. Barea had 12 in 19 games during his senior year in 2005-06. Williams added five rebounds on the night and had a pair of steals.
Â
Ryan Daly led the Blue Hens with 27 points, 4-of-5 from behind the arc and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe while pulling down six boards and adding three helpers.
Â
Like the last time out against Delaware, Northeastern started off with a big run. Last game the Huskies had a 16-point advantage before Delaware got on the board, Thursday Northeastern held Delaware scoreless for the first 7:32 of play en route to an 8-0 lead.
Â
Unlike the last time out, Delaware responded to the Huskies run with a 23-6 run of their own, including a 13-0 run over a 3:52 span before
T.J. Williams ended that with a jumper at the 4:54 mark.
Â
Williams followed that basket with another with 3:11 left, sparking a 9-1 run over the next two minutes to make it a one-point game with just over a minute left in the half. Delaware got a couple points back on a Ryan Daly layup to head to the locker rooms with a three-point lead at the half.
Â
Northeastern jumped out quickly at the half, erasing the Delaware lead and building up a six-point edge of their own using a 13-4 run in the first four minutes of play.
Â
But once again the Blue Hens countered that run with a 10-0 run of their own to make it a 46-41 ball game in favor of Delaware.
Â
After being held without a basket for nearly three minutes, Max Boursiquot ended Delaware's streak with a layup, followed by a Williams trey to even the score at 46-all.
Â
Eric Carter drew, and completed, an and-one to give Delaware another three-point lead, but
Alex Murphy ended that with a three to retie the score at 49-all.
Â
However, Delaware used 10 free throws and a pair of threes with time winding down on the shot clock by Daly to take a 63-51 lead with just over two minutes to play as they would hang on to earn their first CAA victory of the season. Â
Â
The Huskies will look to round out the road trip Saturday afternoon with a win when they take on Hofstra at the Mack Sports Complex at 4 p.m.
