NEWARK, Del. – Rounding out a three-game road stretch Friday night at Delaware, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to finish its trip on a winning note as NU was handed a 65-53 defeat by the Blue Hens at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
Francesca Sally took the reigns of the Huskies' offense during the second quarter, knocking down four of her five attempts from the field while accounting for 10 of Northeastern's 14 points. Despite finishing with the team scoring high, 14 points, her three-game, double-double streak came to an unfortunate end as the six-foot-two, senior center hauled in only seven rebounds.
Â
Shannon Todd and
Gabby Giacone each joined Sally in double-figures, posting 13 and 10 points, respectively. Todd drained three of the Huskies' six 3-point balls and completed a three-point play the old-fashioned way during the final minute of regulation, achieving her highest scoring output since Nov. 26 against Wichita State (19 points).
Â
Northeastern (6-12, 2-4 CAA) kept pace with Delaware (9-8, 3-3 CAA) to start but had trouble finding the bottom of the net following the 4:57 media timeout in the first quarter. Exiting the break, Giacone hit two free throws to tie the game at 7-7, but the Huskies proceeded to misfire on their final seven shots of the quarter, allowing the Blue Hens to score 11 unanswered points before the end of the period.
Â
Delaware's 7-0 run to begin the second quarter forced NU to call its second timeout with 8:22 remaining in the half, before Sally connected on a 3-pointer that resulted in Northeastern's first basket in more than eight minutes.
Â
Sade Chatman was a thorn in the Huskies' side all evening long, mirroring Sally's 10-point second quarter and ending the night with 20 points to lead all scorers. Nicole Enabosi registered a double-double for the Blue Hens courtesy of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Erika Brown charted 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Â
Although Northeastern did well limiting Delaware's effectiveness in the paint, the Huskies were a step slower under the Blue Hens' rim. NU came away with only 14 defensive rebounds compared to Delaware's 12 offensive boards, while the Huskies brought down only one out of every three rebounds on their side of the court. In all, Northeastern wound up the wrong side of a -9 rebounding margin, despite committing two fewer turnovers than the Blue Hens.
Â
During the final three quarters of the game, NU shot 41 percent from the field and was narrowly outscored by Delaware, 47-46.
