BOSTON – After hosting its final home meet of the season, the Northeastern swim and dive team heads to Central Connecticut State to continue competition leading up to the CAA Championships at the end of February.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Northeastern swimming and diving team (6-2, 2-2 CAA) celebrated its senior class with a 199-101 victory over an undefeated Vermont team (5-1, 3-0 America East) on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies raced to 15 first place finishes of 16 total events.
Â
The meet was highlighted by a number of new names on the score sheet. Sophomore
Sophie Tallier scored her first points of the season with a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:20.22. Freshman
Angela Gyurina also put her name on the score sheet for the first time, grabbing first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.76. Gyurina is the third of nine rookies to notch a first place finish in an individual event this season.
Â
The senior class went out with a bang, contributing five first place finishes, eleven top five finishes and 58 points. Additionally, all-senior teams claimed second in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay.
Â
Senior captain
Delaney Lanker swept the butterfly events, clocking 58.90 and 2:07.72 in the 100 and 200 respectively. Fellow captain
Jordan Domeier tabbed her first top finish of the season in the 400 IM, touching the pad at 4:42.43.
Â
On the diving boards,
Alyssa Seales was again a standout performer for the Huskies. Seales set a new season high on the 3-meter board with a score of 275.85 en route to taking first in both events. Joined by teammates
Jacquelyn Gover and
Caroline Gonsalves, the trio claimed the top three spots in the one and three meter boards.
Â
COMMON THREADS
Central Connecticut and Northeastern have a number of schedule cross-overs throughout the 2016-17 campaign.
Â
Both programs took on the New Hampshire Wildcats early in the season, The Huskies outscoring the Wildcats 195-105 and UNH taking a 203-148 victory over the Blue Devils.
Â
The two teams met for the first time this season at the Frank Elm Invitational in late November, Northeastern placing third of 10 with 1,194.5 points and Central Connecticut finishing fifth with 770 points ahead of NEC rivals LIU Brooklyn and Wagner. Blue Devils junior Maddy Garber won the 200 breaststroke at Rutgers with a NCAA B Cut time of 2:14.55 and junior Annemarie Durham set a new school record and took first in the three-meter dive with a score of 271.70. For Northeastern,
Megan Clark set three school records at the meet, setting the bar at 23.06 in the 50 freestyle and resetting the 100 freestyle record twice over with swims of 50.52 in the preliminary round and 50.29 in the finals. Junior
Jacquelyn Gover took first overall in the one-meter dive with an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 276.15.
Â
Just prior to the Frank Elm Invitational, Central Connecticut opened up its conference schedule hosting Bryant and Wagner. The Blue Devils topped Wagner 221-132 at the meet, an opponent Northeastern will face next weekend. Central Connecticut is also slated to go head to head with NEC foe LIU Brooklyn later this season while the Huskies will also take on the Blackbirds next weekend at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
Â
Outside of the swimming world, Northeastern and Central Connecticut crossed paths during the cross country season, with the Huskies participating in the CCSU Mini Meet in October. The Blue Devils track and field team is also shipping up to Boston to compete at the Joe Donahue Games on Friday, Jan. 20 hosted by Northeastern.
Â
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
The Blue Devils will have a busy weekend as they travel to Yale on Friday, Jan. 20 before hosting the Huskies on Saturday. These are the first two meets of 2017 for Central Connecticut and the first competition the team will see since the Frank Elm Invitational in late November.
Â
Heading into the second half of the season, Central Connecticut holds a firm spot at the top of the NEC. Of 25 different events contested, CCSU has the top time in seven and has 24 performances in the top three of the conference. Leading the way are Valentina Gomez and Christine Rasile in the freestyle, Maddison Garber in the breaststroke and Annemarie Durham on the diving board. Rasile clocked season bests 50.62 and 1:51.01 in the 100 and 200 freestyle at the Frank Elm Invitational, rivaling Northeastern's times of 50.29 and 1:51.42 at the same meet. Likewise, Valentina Gomez owns the top NEC time in the 500 freestyle with a swim of 4:58.19 and the second best time in the 1650 freestyle, finishing in 17:19.52, as compared to Northeastern with season bests of 4:56.18 and 17:12.12. Maddison Garber dominates the breaststroke events in the NEC with the top time of 1:02.06 in the 100 and raced to a blistering 2:14.55 NCAA B Cut time in the 200 breast at Frank Elm. While Bryant owns the NEC diving events, Annemarie Durham represents the Blue Devils well, as she notched an NCAA Zone qualifier and new school record in the three-meter dive with a score of 271.70 at the Frank Elm Invitational. More telling is the sheer number of weekly awards that Central Connecticut has garnered through the 2016-17 campaign to date. In the diving well, Durham has earned two weekly awards while powerhouse Bryant has earned five and Wager has notched one. However in the swimming lanes, Central Connecticut leads with four awards overall, three to Maddison Garber, and Sacred Heart, St. Francis and Wagner each having earned just two.
Â
The Blue Devils have already topped conference foes Bryant and Wagner and will face Sacred Heart and LIU Brooklyn before heading to NEC Championships.
Â
Northeastern and Central Connecticut have not gone head to head since Oct. 2009 when the Huskies took a 175-108 victory from the Blue Devils.
Â
CAA UPDATE
Conference championships are shaping up to be an all-out battle in 2017. Each of the seven women's programs are competing at high levels midway through the season.
Â
Delaware and Northeastern will perhaps have the best look at the competition, as both teams have gone head to head with four CAA opponents during the regular season. Northeastern stands at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the CAA while Delaware sits at 4-7 overall and 0-4 in conference. James Madison and Drexel are two of the hottest teams in the CAA, with the Dukes off to a 7-0 start and the Dragons not far behind at 7-1. Both of those teams have concluded conference match ups until championships with James Madison going 3-0 and Drexel posting a 2-0 CAA record.
Â
In addition to overall record dominance, James Madison and Drexel have won multiple CAA swimmers and divers of the week, the only two schools to do so in both awards. James Madison's Katie Parker has two swimmer of the week awards to her name, and Quinn MacMillian has earned one. The Dukes have also excelled on the diving boards with Olivia Lehman grabing two diver of the week honors and Carlyn McNeely notching one. Drexel is just off a mid-season tear where the Dragons claimed swimmer of the week five out of six weeks from Oct. 26th through Jan. 10th. Rachel Bernhardt and Alexa Kutch bear ownership of each of those accolades. On the diving board, Madison Kramer has garnered two diver of the week awards. Towson and Northeastern are the only other CAA programs to earn multiple swimmer or diver awards with both notching two diver of the week honors.
