BOSTON –
T.J. Williams went in for the game-tying basket with time winding down in regulation and his driving layup rimmed out as the Northeastern men's basketball team fell in a tight game to Elon 51-49 Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
Â
The loss was the Huskies' (12-9, 4-5 CAA) first on their home turf this season and their fourth straight while Elon (13-9, 5-4) won its third straight contest.
Â
Alex Murphy added 11 points and 10 rebounds and finished with his first career double-double hitting some big threes down the stretch for Northeastern. His double-double marks the sixth of the season for Northeastern as he becomes the fourth different Husky this year to notch a double-double.
Â
T.J. Williams finished with a team-high 12 points for the Huskies, his first game under 16 points this season while
Devon Begley added seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Â
Elon was led by Tyler Seibring who had 15 points and eight rebounds while Brian Dawkins had 12 points and eight boards and Dmitri Thompson finished with eight points and 10 rebounds for the Phoenix.
Â
Both teams, who entered the game in the top-half of the conference in 3-point shooting (the Huskies first with a .399 percentage, Elon fourth at .365) finished shooting just 21.1 percent and 21.9 percent respectively from behind the arc.
Â
But to begin things, Begley drilled a three to get the Huskies going in the first half. Both teams went basket-for-basket throughout the first half with Elon hanging on to a slight, one-point lead for the majority of the stanza.
Â
Northeastern went on a 6-0 run to make it a 20-19 game, holding the Phoenix without a basket in seven straight ties. But Elon bounced back to regain a 24-22 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Â
The second half was the same story as both teams traded baskets, and played tough defense until
Bolden Brace hit back-to-back threes to give the Huskies a 40-36 lead forcing Elon to call a timeout with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation. The first called timeout, followed immediately by a media timeout on the following whistle settled both teams down as they each were only able to manage a pair of points over a three-and-a-half-minute stretch.
Â
After the Huskies managed a four-point lead on a Murphy trey, Elon responded as Dainan Swoope hit a three just 14 seconds later to make it a 47-46 game. Seibring followed with a layup to help Elon regain the lead in a game that saw four ties and 13 lead changes.
Â
Elon built that lead up to three as Thompson flew in and got the rebound and putback to make it a 50-47 game. After a couple Husky 3-point misses, the Huskies started fouling and forced an Elon turnover as the Phoenix were unable to inbound the ball.
Â
Begley drove to the basket to make it a one-point game, and Northeastern fouled to force a one-and-one, of which Swoope missed the second giving Williams his chance to tie it at the buzzer.
Â
Northeastern will return home to face Towson on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena looking to snap their four-game skid.Â
