Three-goal third period lifts UML past No. 13 Northeastern, 4-2

Box Score
LOWELL, Mass. – With the No. 13 Northeastern men's hockey team (6-3-1, 4-1-0) leading 2-1 through two periods, UMass Lowell (6-6-0, 3-5-0) scored twice in the first five minutes of the third period before adding an insurance marker late to come back and top the Huskies on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center, 4-2.

Jeremy Davies and Nolan Stevens both scored for the Huskies, both power play markers. Davies opened the scoring midway through the first period with his second of the year before UML's Ryan Lohin tied it up with a late first period goal of his own, also on the power play. Northeastern then converted on a five-minute major on Stevens' seventh of the year to give the visitors the one-goal edge through 40 minutes.

From there it was all River Hawks, who outshot NU 13-8 in the final frame and knotted the game at two on Tommy Panico's second of the year before Nick Master gave UMass Lowell the lead with 14:51 to go in regulation on a long shot from just inside the blue line.

Cayden Primeau made 26 saves in goal in his second straight start while Chris Hernberg steered aside 33 Northeastern shots. The Huskies, which held a slight edge in shots on goal at 35-30, was 2-of-3 on the power play while UML went 1-of-4.

Goal descriptions
• Northeastern drew first blood midway through the first period on Davies' first of the season. With the Huskies on the power play, Adam Gaudette collected a loose puck in the corner before dishing to Nolan Stevens below the faceoff dot. Stevens then drew a defenseman towards him as Davies crept in from the point, then fed the sophomore who snuck a shot through Hernberg's pads for the 1-0 lead.

• UMass Lowell struck back with a power play tally of its own late in the opening frame off the stick of Lohin. On the ensuing faceoff after the Huskies were called for a hold, Kenny Hausinger tossed a pass over to Lohin the right circle, and Lohin fired a wrist shot that got under the arm of Primeau for the score.

• Stevens put Northeastern up 2-1 with 3:14 to play in the second period with his second of the weekend and seventh of the season. After Connor Sodergren was called for a five-minute major for contact to the head elbowing, the Huskies went on the attack with meticulous puck movement through the attacking zone. With Zach Solow controlling the puck at the point, he fed it down to Gaudette's office in the left face-off dot. Gaudette's shot bid was blocked by a defenseman, but Stevens was stationed on the doorstep to knock it home and make it 2-1.

• UMass Lowell leveled the score at two just 2:31 into the third period on Panico's second of the year. With Ryan Dmowski and Charlie Levesque operating in the attacking zone, Levesque sent the puck out in front of the crease, where Panico was able to get a stick on it and beat Primeau five-hole.

• The River Hawks went up 3-2 less than three minutes later on Master's first of the year, scooping up a puck in the defensive zone to create a one-on-one the other way before firing a shot through the legs of the NU defenseman that fooled Primeau to give UML the lead.

• UMass Lowell added an insurance marker with 48.8 seconds remaining on Panico's second of the night. After Northeastern pulled Primeau in favor of the extra attacker, Panico won a puck battle along the wall in the UML zone before lofting it from 190 feet into the open goal to close out the scoring.

Stats of the game
• Saturday's loss ends Northeastern's four-game winning streak, which was the program's best Hockey East start since the 2008-09 season.

• Stevens extended his point streak to a season-long four games (six goals, two assists), while Solow has six assists in his last three games.

• Gaudette has four points (two goals, two assists) in his last two games, and is one point away from becoming the 51st player in team history to reach 100 points. He would be just the 22nd to accomplish the feat in three seasons or less.

The road ahead
• The Huskies return home next weekend as Northeastern hosts a pair of contests at Matthews Arena, beginning on Friday night against Vermont. NU will then take on Boston College on Saturday night, also at 7 p.m. Tickets to the games, and all Northeastern home games, can be purchased by visiting tickets.GoNU.com
