Postgame Quotes
STANFORD, Calif. –A 20-3 second half run started by a pair of
Bolden Brace threes, and extended by the play of Donnell Gresham made it a two-point game late in the second half, but Stanford was able to hang on and take the first game of the PK80 Invitational from the Northeastern men's basketball team 73-59 on Friday afternoon.
Â
During the second-half run, Brace (6) and Gresham (12) accounted for 18 of Northeastern's 20 points.
Â
Brace, who got the start in his native state of California and had dozens of family and friends in the stands, finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds and three assists on the day while Gresham, who started his scoring off with a near-half court three to end the first half, finished with a team-high 15 points, going 4-of-6 from deep.
Â
Stanford was led by Isaac White and Michael Humphrey who each had 17 points on the night, as Humphrey finished with a double-double adding 11 rebounds. Reid Travis, who had been averaging 23.0 ppg through the first three games, was held to his lowest total of the season with 16 points today.
Â
FIRST HALF
It took the Huskies a few minutes to get on the board, but a
Vasa Pusica trey broke the scoreless spell and made it a 4-3 game. After Stanford took a 9-5 lead, the Huskies rallied off five-straight points capped by a Brace three to make it a 10-9 game as the Huskies earned their first, and only, lead of the day.
Â
Following the Huskies lead, Stanford went on a 17-6 run to extend its lead to 28-16 with 4:41 left in the first half. That stretch was ended by a Begley three, but Humphrey matched his effort on the other end and White added a pair of free throws to make it a 33-19 game with just over 90 seconds to go.
Â
The Huskies finished out the first half strong as Murphy laid one in and, after a shot clock violation by the Cardinal to leave the Huskies with 2.5 seconds before the half, Gresham sank a shot taken from just over half court to send the Huskies to the locker room down 33-24.
Â
SECOND HALF
Northeastern extended its run to 7-0 after halftime with a Brace basket to start the second half before Stanford snapped that with a Humphrey outside jumper.
Â
In the midst of the second half, Stanford used a 11-0 run to jump out to a 54-35 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. The streak was halted by a Brace trey that jumpstarted a wild Northeastern run turning that 19-point deficit into just a two-point ballgame.
Â
Brace hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 13. After a Daejon Davis layup, Gresham followed Brace's treys with one of his own, and drove to the bucket on the ensuing possession where he was fouled and completed the and-one to make it a nine-point game.
Â
Gresham followed that up with a block on the next Stanford try as
Maxime Boursiquot got in on the action with a layup on the other end. After a Davis turnover forced by a Gresham steal, the Minnesota native hit a three on the other end to make it a two-point game, 57-55 with 5:42 remaining.
Â
But that was as close as the Huskies were able to get, as Stanford slowly built its lead back up and finished with the 73-59 victory.
