COLUMBUS, OHIO – Ohio State got out to a fast lead and the Northeastern men's basketball team was unable to make up the ground in an 80-55 loss Sunday afternoon in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center.
Â
The Buckeyes (4-0) were paced by Jae'Sean Tate who was a perfect 10-of-10 from the field for 24 points on the day while Keita Bates-Diop tallied 19 points and 7 rebounds and Kaleb Wesson finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Â
The Huskies (2-2) were led by
Donnell Gresham Jr. for the second-straight game as the redshirt sophomore finished with a career-best 16 points, shooting 4-of-8 from deep while adding five rebounds on the day.
Anthony Green was close to a double-double finishing with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds while
Shawn Occeus added nine points and a pair of steals.
Â
Ohio State had the advantage in the paint outscoring Northeastern 48-26 and outrebounding the Huskies 38-29.
Â
FIRST HALF
Ohio State got out to a 15-2 lead through the first five and a half minutes of action paced by Jae'Sean Tate who recorded 11 of those 15 points forcing head coach
Bill Coen to call a timeout and settle things down.
Following the media, Donnell Gresham, who sparked the Huskies 20-3 run against Stanford on Friday, came in and scored five quick points in two minutes to cut the lead down to 10.
Â
But as soon as that happened, Ohio State broke out on a 13-2 run, including a 15-0 run in a four-and-a-half-minute stretch going 7-of-8 from the field, while the Huskies were only able to manage one bucket in 11 tries during that stretch. And again, Gresham was the one to halt that run with a three from the corner.
Â
Ohio State took advantage of the Huskies foul trouble connecting on nine free throws down the stretch though Northeastern had back-to-back buckets including Gresham's third three of the night and a layup from Begley before the half to make it a 47-17 halftime game.
Â
The 17 points were the fewest in a half since the Huskies put up just 17 against UNCW in the regular season finale last season. Northeastern went on to outscore the Seahawks 48-34 in the second half.
Â
SECOND HALF
Pusica scored the first five points of the half for the Huskies via a pair of free throws and a deep three, eventually putting eight on the board for the Huskies in the beginning of the second half. The Huskies doubled their halftime effort putting up 17 through just the first eight minutes of action.
Â
Heading into the under-8 media, the Huskies brought a 9-0 run highlighted by a pair of hard-fought buckets by
Anthony Green, holding Ohio State to a four-minute scoring drought where they were 0-for-8 during that stretch, making just two of their last 13 tries. The run cut into Ohio State's lead making it a 63-41 game.
Â
Tate ended that spurt with a layup, and-one, as Ohio State went on for the 80-55 finish.
