HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Redshirt sophomore
Lizzie George netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 25th minute of the CAA semifinals as the No. 3 Northeastern women's soccer team (13-5-3, 5-1-3) knocked off No. 2 Drexel (11-7-1, 6-2-1) to advance to the championship game on Sunday.
After George's 25th minute strike, she was subbed for junior
Hannah Rosenblatt who then netted her eighth goal of the season and third of the tournament in the 30th minute to give the Huskies a 2-0 edge.
With the win, the Huskies advance to their fourth CAA title game in the last five seasons.
Northeastern dictated the pace of play throughout the match and gave the Dragons very little space to work with offensively. Junior
Nathalie Nidetch made five saves for the Huskies while senior Christiana Ogunsami stopped two shots in goal for Drexel. Ogunsami had 20 saves on 21 shots in the last meeting between the Huskies and Dragons.
The Husky back line of Mikenna McManus,
Eve Goulet, Julianne Ross and
Valentina Soares Gache played a solid 90 minutes each. The quartet of defenders played up on the Dragons, forcing Drexel offsides twice.
Senior
Carly Wilhelm kept the Drexel defense busy as she had three total shots (one on goal). She created Northeastern's first goal off a slick pass from the left win to George. Junior
Nicole Gorman also tried three shots of her own and used her speed to open up space in the middle of the field throughout the match.
Goal Recaps:
- The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute of the match. Wilhelm controlled the ball to the left of the Drexel net and, as defenders closed in on her, she sent the ball to the middle. The ball bounced off a Dragon defender and came right out to George. She leaned into a shot and placed it perfectly in the top-left corner to give Northeastern the game's first goal.
- Rosenblatt doubled the Northeastern lead only five minutes after George's tally. On a similar play to the opening goal, Caparo ran into the Drexel box on the left side. She played a cross into the middle that came out to Rosenblatt at the top of the box. Rosenblatt fired a low shot that beat Ogunsami to extend the Northeastern lead to 2-0.
Championship Game
Northeastern will pursue its second consecutive and fifth overall CAA championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. against No. 1 Hofstra.
