BOSTON – On Senior Day at Matthews Arena, the Northeastern men's basketball team fell to the College of Charleston 85-71 Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Huskies had five different double-digit scorers, the fourth time this season they have achieved this feat, but were unable to stop a hot shooting Charleston line up who shot 62.7 percent from the field during the game led by three Cougars.
Â
T.J. Williams led the way for the Huskies (14-14, 7-9 CAA) for the 20
th time this season with an 18-point, four rebound effort. He was 7-of-7 from the free throw line and moved into second place all-time on the Northeastern free throw single season chart with 175 makes this season.
Â
Northeastern was 12-of-14 from the charity stripe on the day, making their first 11 attempts.
Â
Following Williams were
Anthony Green who put up 13 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field while
Bolden Brace had 11, and
Alex Murphy and Max Boursiquot tallied 10 points apiece. Murphy had a near triple-double pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out six assists on the day.
Â
Three different Cougars accounted for 84 percent of the production for Charleston on the day as Joe Chealey led all scorers with 29 points while Grant Riller and Jarrell Brantley each had 21 on the day. The trio was 26-of-35 from the field and 11-of-18 from deep as the Cougars hit for a season-high 12 threes. Â
Â
Northeastern started the scoring in a very 'Senior Day' fashion as
Jimmy Marshall hit the first shot of the ball game, a three, to get the Huskies going. Williams followed with a pair of free throws and Murphy followed with a three-point play making it an 8-8 ball game through the first six minutes of action.
Â
The two teams paced each other in the first half before Charleston went on a brief 6-0 run that would eventually expand the Cougars' lead to 10 with 1:18 left in the first half of play after a Riller three.
Â
Northeastern cut that lead back to seven after
Shawn Occeus completed a three-point play, where it would remain at the half with Charleston heading into the locker room with a 40-33 advantage.
Â
Like the last game at Charleston, the Huskies came back in the second half, methodically cutting a 13-point lead down to a 48-48 tie through the first six minutes of action using a 13-0 run fueled by three straight threes via Williams, Marshall and
Bolden Brace, while back-to-back layups by Max Boursiquot tied the ball game up with 13:57 to play.
Â
But unlike the previous game against the Cougars, Charleston responded and built that lead back up to 17 over the next nine minutes to take a 75-58 lead capped by another Riller three, hanging on for the 85-71 victory.
Â
The Huskies will round out the regular season next week when they head down to North Carolina for a pair of road games at Elon and UNCW.Â
