Day One Recap
BOSTON – Supported by three school records from
Naukym Morton,
Nick Fofana and
Katie Hanlon, and over 90 top 10 finishes, the Northeastern men's and women's track and field teams swept the New England Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday and Saturday. The women's team finished with a score of 151, beating second place Rhode Island by almost 100 points (59). The men also earned victory by a significant margin, besting second place Rhode Island 177-114.
"The men's and women's programs had a strong showing this weekend as all of our event groups came to compete and were able to contribute to the overall programs success "said head coach
Cathrine Erickson. "I am extremely pleased with how hard our coaching staff has worked to prepare the athletes. They have put a lot of effort into making sure the athletes were ready to compete and it showed this weekend."
Friday's competition featured mostly preliminary contests with 11 athletes advancing to Saturday's championship races. Over the weekend, the men's team saw 21 personal bests, 11 NU top 10 marks, 38 New England qualifying marks and just before next weekend's IC4A meet, an additional 26 IC4A qualifying performances. The women's team also enjoyed success, posting 10 personal bests, two NU top 10 marks, 42 New England qualifying marks and 17 more ECAC qualifying performances.
Saturday's finals competition was highlighted by three new school records. Junior
Nick Fofana competed both days in the men's heptathlon and raised the record bar to a score of 5217. The previous program high was set by Stefano Combi during the 2011-12 season with a score of 5201 points. Freshman standout
Naukym Morton upped his 60m dash school record from 6.78 to 6.77 in the prelims of the contest and then went on to run 6.72 in the finals for a new meet record. On the women's side,
Katie Hanlon qualified for the finals as the top seed on Friday with a run of 1:15.12 and returned Saturday with a time of 1:13.68, barely beating out
Camille Gooden's 1:13.69 record from the 2014-15 season.
Men's Heptathlon
To begin the day,
Nick Fofana and Matt Richards took first and second in the 60m hurdles with times of 8.38 and 8.60 respectively. In the second to last event, Fofana grabbed a top finish in the pole vault clearing 4.20m.
Shawn Bleichert placed third overall in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.11 and added six points to Northeastern's score. Matt Richards won the 1000 meter run in 2:49.52 and placed third overall with a score of 4656.
Women's Performances
Leeyan Redwood and
Zoe Taitel finished second and third in the shot put with throws of 13.80m and 13.67m while
Zhane Goode and
Rose Castle added two more top 10 finishes in the triple jump. After winning the women's pentathlon the day before,
Betsy Garnick placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.75. Sprinting duo
Jessica Scott and
Sydney Fisher placed second and third in the 60m dash with times of 7.62 and 7.76 combining for 14 points. In the high jump,
Paige Suse and
Danae Bucci claimed first and second with jumps of 1.74 and 1.70 meters. Fisher and
Patrice Williams also finished in the top eight of the 200 meter dash finishing in 25.40 and 25.10. The women's 4 x 800 meter relay, composed of
Sarah Adler, Corrine Myers,
Edlyn Gulama and
Amanda Hickey, clocked 9:20.85 and finished third out of 15 relay teams.
Men's Performances
Ryan Kim and
Eric Mellusi took two of the top three finishes in the shot put throwing 16.40m and 16.02m. In the men's 500m, rookie
Austin Lin grabbed 10 points for Northeastern with a top finish clocking 1:05.91.
Paul Duffey shaved almost two seconds off his prelim time in the 800 meters racing to second place with a time of 1:49.05 and
Chris Jewett ran sub-22 in the 200m for the first time in his career (21.98).
"It is really nice to the fruits of our labor payoff especially for the captains and leadership group as they have done a really good job keeping our team moving in the right direction."
Next Up
To close out the indoor season, the Huskies will compete at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Boston University next weekend. To date, the men have recorded 88 IC4A qualifying performances while the women have notched 63. After the conclusion of indoors, Northeastern will shift its focus to preparing for the outdoor season that begins March 24
th and 25
th at Rice University.
