Highlights
BOSTON – Jordan Greenway's power play goal 3:11 into overtime gave No. 8/6 Boston University (22-10-3) the first game of the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series over the Northeastern men's ice hockey team (18-14-5) on Friday night at Agganis Arena, 3-2.
The goal came after the Huskies were whistled for hooking less than two minutes into the extra frame, and the Terriers pounced at the tail end of the man advantage when Clayton Keller spotted Greenway in the left dot, who then snapped a shot past NU goaltender
Ryan Ruck (32 saves) for the win.
Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Hobey Baker candidates
Zach Aston-Reese and
Dylan Sikura just 2:29 apart before the Terriers cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Dante Fabbro with 12:27 to go in the second period. The Terriers would continue to claw back, and knotted the game at two midway through the third period on a tally from Chase Phelps to force overtime.
Both netminders kept their teams in the contest with several game-saving stops throughout the contest as Jake Oettinger made 33 saves, including the final 29 shots he faced, while Ruck had more than 30 saves for the 11th time this season.
Shots were even at 35 apiece, while the Terriers scored twice on their five power play attempts and kept the NU power play unit in check throughout the night (0-of-4).
Goal descriptions:
• Northeastern struck first 7:23 into the game on Aston-Reese's 31st of the season, beating Oettinger off the right post.
Jeremy Davies began the play by carrying the puck through the neutral zone before tossing it across to
Nolan Stevens crossing the blue line on the left side. Stevens battled for position in the corner before shuffling it over to Aston-Reese, who flew out from behind the cage and ripping a shot off the post and in.
• The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 just 2:29 later on Sikura's 21st of the year following some crisp passing from Northeastern. With NU controlling the puck in the attacking zone,
Eric Williams slid the puck across the blue line to his partner Davies. Davies then got Oettinger to commit to the shot before threading a pass across the seam to Sikura on the doorstep for the tap-in.
• Boston University cut the deficit to 2-1 with 12:27 remaining in the second period on Fabbro's sixth of the season. After NU was assessed a tripping minor on a semi-breakaway by Patrick Harper, Kieffer Bellows won the ensuing face-off back to Brandon Hickey at the point. Hickey then tossed a pass over to Fabbro at the right point, whose shot got through a screen and under the arm of Ruck for the score.
• The Terriers buried the equalizer midway through the third period on Phelps' third of the year when Patrick Curry battled below the goal line to win a battle and find Phelps alone in the slot, who quickly gathered the puck and beat Ruck five-hole to make it 2-2.
• BU completed the comeback less than four minutes into overtime on Greenway's ninth of the season when he received a cross-zone pass from Keller in the left dot before whipping a shot past Ruck for the game-winner.
