No. 7 NU claims Dreissigacker Cup in thrilling fashion at No. 9 Brown

PROVIDENCE – Facing a 15 mile per hour headwind and moderate chop, the No. 7 Northeastern men's rowing team went head-to-head with No. 9 Brown for the Dreissigacker Cup on the Seekonk River on Saturday morning.

As the headwind built over the course of racing, the Huskies and Bears went stroke for stroke, bow ball to bow ball in the first varsity for the duration of the race before the Huskies made a last ditch push to top the Bears by 0.01 seconds. The photo finish forced a video review by the officials before awarding the Dreissigacker Cup to the Huskies with a time of 6:12.55 ahead of Brown at 6:12.56.

Saturday morning's regatta was the 53rd meeting between the New England rivals. Brown holds a 30-23 advantage in the all-time series, which has been rowed uninterrupted since 1965. The Huskies, who enjoyed a dominating run in the series in the early 2000s, won the cup for the fourth time in the last six seasons.

The second and third varsity boats also found success in the morning's races, with the second varsity securing a one-seat victory over the Bears at 6:22.8 while Brown cross at 6:23.7.

The third varsity was solid from start to finish in their competition before Northeastern earned a two-seat victory with a time of 6:35.3 ahead of the Bears at 6:35.7.

The Huskies will take a weekend off before returning to the Charles River on April 29 to battle No. 5 Harvard for the Smith Cup. Northeastern will then host No. 12 Wisconsin the following morning with the Congram Cup on the line.
