No. 4 Harvard edges No. 9 Northeastern to retain the Smith Cup

Watch Sunday's Race | Results | Boatings

BOSTON – On a picturesque morning in Boston, No. 9 Northeastern and No. 4 Harvard met for the 28th installment of the Smith Cup, with the crews going stroke for stroke on the calm waters on the Charles River.

Northeastern bolted out to an early two-seat lead in the first varsity face during the opening 200-meters before the Crimson fought back to level the race approaching the 500-meter mark. As the crews entered the second 500-meters, Harvard took a one seat advantage before opening it to a half length lead at the midway mark. The Huskies continued to fight, though, not allowing the Crimson to take an open water lead and kept its bow seat on Harvard's cox seat. Northeastern maintained contact through the third 500, but the Crimson broke an open water lead in the final 500-meter to take the race with a time of 5:44.329 to Northeastern's 5:51.420.

Harvard holds a 25-3 advantage in the all-time cup series, which is named for Charlie Smith, a boatman at Harvard for 10 years and at Northeastern for five. The Huskies will be looking to return the cup to Henderson Boathouse for the first time since 1997.

The second varsity race saw Harvard begin with a slight lead during the first 250-meters before extending its advantage to a half length lead through the opening 500-meters. The Crimson continued dictate the race in the second 500-meters to take a full length lead despite Northeastern making an early push to cut into the deficit approaching the Mass. Ave. bridge. The crews were bow to stern in favor of Harvard as the Crimson began to move in the final 750-meters, but Northeastern answered to keep the gap and overlap, ultimately finishing second with a time of 5:57.433 to Harvard's 5:54.466.

Similar to the 1V, the third varsity race started out with Northeastern holding a two-seat lead in the first 250-meters before Harvard started to take over, earning a 3/4 length advantage during the second 500-meters before extending it to an open water lead midway through the race, finishing first with a time of 5:59.526, while the Huskies took second at 6:09.985.

Northeastern will be back on the water tomorrow morning in the regular season finale as the Huskies host No. 13 Wisconsin for the Congram Cup. The first varsity kicks things off at 9 a.m., and all races will be streamed live on GoNU.com/xstream.
