BOSTON – Racing on consecutive days for the first time this season, the No. 9 Northeastern men's rowing team captured the Congram Cup for the 13th straight year with a victory over No. 13 Wisconsin on Sunday morning on the Charles River.
Faced with a 10 mile per hour tailwind, the first varsity was tight with the Badgers out of the gates, with the Huskies holding a slight edge through the first 250-meters. Northeastern worked to extend the advantage to three seats 750-meters into the race and upped it to half a length approaching the Mass Ave. bridge. As Northeastern attempted to create an open water lead, Wisconsin kept its bow ball on NU's stern with 600-meters to go, and fought back to cut into the deficit in the final moments of the race, but Northeastern held strong to cross the line at 5:39.3 to Wisconsin's 5:41.6.
The cup is named after former head coach Buzz Congram, who led the Huskies for 23 seasons. His record for against the absolute best in collegiate rowing was 83 wins and 63 losses. In the Eastern Sprints, Congram's Huskies advanced to the Grand Final 14 of 23 times, including nine of the last 10. His crews won bronze medals in 1981 and '88 and silver in 1991 and '95. Northeastern previously competed against Rutgers for the Congram Cup from 2001 to 2008, winning all eight meetings against the Scarlet Knights.
The second varsity race saw the Huskies jump out to a two-seat lead and maintain the edge through the first 500-meters. Wisconsin, however, took a seat back before pulling even at the midway mark of the race. The Badgers went ahead by one seat with 800-meters to go and pushed it to a half length entering the final 500-meters. Northeastern continued to fight, though, and closed the gap in the final 200-meters but the Badgers held on for a time of 5:40.3, just ahead of NU at 5:41.3
Northeastern and Wisconsin were neck and neck during the opening 250-meters in the third varsity race before the Huskies picked up a one seat advantage through the first 500-meters. Wisconsin brought the race back to even before taking a one seat edge of its own at the Mass Ave. bridge. Northeastern flipped the script with 750-meters remaining to go up a seat, and maintained the advantage to earn a two-second win at 5:51.9.
Postseason competition gets underway for Northeastern in two weeks when the Huskies travel to Worcester for the Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
