CHICAGO – Northeastern's
Zach Aston-Reese added to his trophy case on Friday night when the senior winger was named a CCM/AHCA First-Team All-American. Aston-Reese becomes the 19th All-American in program history as well as the team's first selection to the first team since Brad Thiessen in 2009.
In total, 25 players were named CCM All-Americans from 19 universities. Aston-Reese is one of six players from Hockey East to pick up the award, and becomes part of an exclusive club as only the fourth Northeastern player to receive All-American recognition since 2005 and the second under head coach
Jim Madigan (
Kevin Roy, 2015).
Aston-Reese, the 2017 Hockey East Player of the Year, was joined on the first team in the East by Charles Williams (Canisius) in goal, defensemen Adam Fox (Harvard) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston University) and fellow forwards Spencer Foo and Mike Vecchione of Union. The complete list of 2017 All-Americans can be found below.
The Staten Island, New York native had a season for the ages in 2016-17 with Northeastern. Aston-Reese recorded 63 points in 38 games in 2016-17, currently tied for the most in the nation and most for a Northeastern Husky since 1985-86. He is also tied for or owns the nation's lead in total goals (31), goals per game (0.82), points per game (1.66), multi-goal games (eight) and hat tricks (three).
On March 30, Aston-Reese became the second Husky in program history to be named to the Hobey Hat Trick (Thiessen, 2009). The three finalists were selected from the initial list of Top Ten candidates by the 27-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
Over the last five seasons in college hockey, only 12 Division I players have reached 60 points in a single-season. Of those, only four have reached 60 points in as many or fewer games than Aston-Reese (35): Vecchione (35 games in 2016-17), Kyle Conner (34 games in 2015-16), Jack Eichel (34 games in 2014-15) and Johnny Gaudreau (31 games in 2013-14). Two went on to win the Hobey Baker Award and the other two reached the Hobey Hat Trick.
He's also just one of four players in the last five seasons to reach 50 points in less than 30 games (Vecchione in 2016-17, Kyle Connor in 2015-16 and Gaudreau in 2013-14). Aston-Reese is also one of six NCAA players in the last five years to score 30 goals in a season. In addition, Aston-Reese is the only Husky in the last 30 years to record three hat tricks in a season, and the only player in program history to score a hat trick in consecutive games.
Aston-Reese's versatility was put on display throughout the 2016-17 season. A 200-foot player, he played in every situation: even strength, power play, penalty kill, extra attacker and late-game situations. Throughout the campaign, Aston-Reese played with 16 different line combinations due to injuries to linemates John and
Nolan Stevens, among others, and played nine games at left wing, 11 games at center and 18 games at right wing.
His performance this season ranks him tied for sixth in single-season scoring at Northeastern (63) and tied for seventh in single-season goals (31), and finished his collegiate career ranked 12th in both career points (148) and career goals (66), while ranked in a tie for 18th all-time at Northeastern in assists (82).
In addition to contending for the Hobey Baker Award, Aston-Reese was a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award, given annually to the top American born player in New England. He was also a First Team Hockey East All-Star, two-time Hockey East Player of the Month (November and February), the National Player of the Month in February, and a three-time Hockey East Player of the Week this season.
