BOSTON -- Kicking off the season against crosstown rival Boston University, the No. 7 Northeastern men's rowing team battled the Terriers for the Arlett Cup on Sunday morning on the Charles River.
With the crews jockeying for an early lead in the opening stages of the first varsity race, the Huskies caught a crab 250-meters in. The incident forced the Red and Black to stop the boat in order to extract the oar and begin rowing again. The Terriers, meanwhile, continued to push and jumped out to an open water advantage. Northeastern continued to fight and began to neutralize Boston University's advantage to cut the deficit down, but BU ultimately prevailed with a time of 6:13.5 to top NU by a length (6:18.3).
Back home on the Charles, rivals NU and BU continued a series that has been rowed continuously since 1966. Northeastern leads the all-time series, 44-15. Since 1978, the crews have competed for the Arlett Cup, named for the late Ernie Arlett, Northeastern's first men's rowing coach. The Huskies have won 29 of the 41 cup races, including 12 of the last 17 and three of the last six.
In the second varsity, Boston University bolted out to a three-seat edge early in the race and maintained the lead through the 1000-meter mark. The Huskies made a big push during the third 500-meters to take a five-seat lead on BU entering the final portion of the race, and staved off a final Terrier push to cross the finish a half second ahead at 6:26.5.
The third varsity also found success during a tight race through the entire course. While Boston University had a two-seat lead at the midway mark, Northeastern brought it back to even during the third 500-meters before leading by a deck during the final 20 strokes and win the race with a time of 6:29.3 to top BU (6:29.6).
Northeastern will be back in action on Saturday when the Huskies head to Providence to take on Brown for the Dreissigacker Cup.
