WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Northeastern women's track and field team claimed it's second straight New England Outdoor Championship this afternoon at Lee Track at Williams College. The Huskies edged the University of Rhode Island by just half a point to take the title. Additionally, this is the fourth consecutive New England title for the women, including both indoor and outdoor competition. The men's team also endured a back and forth battle with the Rams, eventually taking second overall behind a talented Rhode Island team.
"The track and field program has accomplished historic achievements this year and I am proud of every athlete, coach and staff member who has encouraged and supported each other along the way" remarked head coach
Cathrine Erickson. "We have a lot of talent and potential and today we saw some great performances that made the women's win possible. People stepped up and accomplished when given another opportunity and we need to continue to work hard and continue to get better...For the men, we closed a big gap on URI today, but just didn't have enough to catch them. Our guys have had a phenomenal year and will be back to work after the championship season. Our talent and potential has no limits and our incoming recruiting class will make our program even stronger."
Â
Leading the women to victory on day two was freshman
Leeyan Redwood, who contributed 18 points and was named New England Champion in the discus with a throw of 45.09m. Redwood also earned second place in the shot put, throwing 13.37m. In the 400m dash,
Patrice Williams secured a third place finish, running 54.12. The sophomore's 53.71 prelims run will potentially earn her a ticket to the NCAA East Regional meet. Last weekend, Williams ranked 71
st in the east after clocking 54.51 at the CAA Championship and the 0.8 second improvement boosted her to 35
th in the qualifying region. Also heading to the NCAA East Regional meet will be
Jordan O'Dea who shaved four seconds off her time from last weekend with a 10:21.12 finish in the 3000m steeplechase.
Â
Paul Duffey and
Marc Rienas headlined the 800m events today. The duo took first and second in the 800m and then backed it up with two incredible legs of the first place 4x800m relay. Senior captain
Paul Duffey now qualifies for the NCAA East Regional meet in both the 800m and 1500m races. The Hanson, Mass. native punched his ticket in the 1500m earlier this season while today's run of 1:49.53 moved him from 57
th to qualifying range at 43
rd.
David Adams also sured up his ticket to Kentucky, now ranking 39
th in the 110m hurdles after his second place finish today. Other notable performances included
Alex Julian notching a personal best in the high jump at 1.96m, good for fourth overall, and
Chance Lamberth's first place finish in the 1500m where he knocked three seconds off his time from last weekend with a 3:51.08 finish that earned 10 points for the Huskies.
"It has been a great year and I am extremely proud of every member of this program as we have worked extremely hard all year for each other."
Â
Pending full results from meets across the country this weekend, a contingent of six Huskies currently qualify for the NCAA East Regional meet May 25
th-27
th at the University of Kentucky. The group includes senior captain
Paul Duffey (800m, 1500m), senior
Jordan O'Dea (3000m steeplechase), junior
Ryan Kim (shot put), sophomore
Paige Suse (high jump), sophomore
Patrice Williams (400m dash) and freshman
David Adams (400m hurdles). A top 12 finish at the meet would earn them an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship at the University of Oregon in June.
