Day Two Recap
LEXINGTON. Ky. – As the lone Husky racing on the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary round, senior captain
Paul Duffey left it all on the track in his final collegiate race. In the NCAA quarterfinals, Duffey finished 11
th overall with a time of 3:48.77.
Â
At the crack of the starting gun, Duffey ran hard to stake a claim at the front of the pack, pacing the group to 1:02 through the first 400m. Approaching the 800m mark, Duffey held a solid grip on third, on the heels of Michigan State's Justine Kiprotich, the eventual champion, and Notre Dame's Jacob Dumford. With about 700m to go, the race turned physical with a number of nudges shaking up the standings, forcing Duffey to the middle of the group. The 13 competitors engaged in an all out sprint during the bell lap, Duffey closing out his career with his highest finish ever at the East Regionals.
Â
Duffey leaves Northeastern as one of the most decorated distance runners to represent the Huskies. This season alone, Duffey earned an IC4A cross country title, second at CAA cross country championships, a school record in the distance medley relay, his first career sub-four minute mile, an indoor 1000m IC4a title, an outdoor 800m New England championship, a berth into the NCAA Outdoor quarterfinals and led his team to its second straight IC4A cross country title and third straight CAA Outdoor championship.
Â
With the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, the Huskies will turn their attention to preparing for the 2017-18 season, which could kick off in as little as 16 weeks.
