Â
NEWARK, Del. – The Northeastern track and field team is shipping back to Boston with 30 CAA medals, a Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet award and a highly coveted CAA Championship trophy. The men accumulated 273 points en route to the championship, followed by William and Mary with 247 and UNCW with 115. The women completed the meet with 80 points, ranking them sixth in the competition field.
Â
"It is never easy to win and this year we have seen a lot of adversity, however, this group never quit," said head coach
Cathrine Erickson following the meet. "This group of 35 is comprised of a bunch of guys who have grown considerably and never backed down from the challenge. We knew this meet could be close and these guys rallied and we saw a number of personal bests at the meet. The athletes trusted the strategy that we presented to them and they hammered when they needed to. I am extremely proud of them and our coaching staff. This is a great group!"
Â
Voted on by the CAA coaches, freshman
David Adams received the Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet recognition for his first and second place finishes in the 400m hurdles and 110m hurdles as well as his role in Northeastern's second place finish in the 4x400m relay.
Â
On the men's side,
Eric Mellusi contributed a team-high 20 points during the two-day meet.
Nick Fofana ranked second with 19 individual points and
David Adams earned 18 for the Red and Black.
Patrice Williams led the women with 13 points, while
Jordan O'Dea's gold finish in the 3000m steeplechase ranked her second on the team with 10 total points.
Â
CLEAN SWEEPS
After day one, the Huskies trailed William and Mary however the meet began to turn in favor of Northeastern when three podium sweeps gave them a 72 point boost.
Naukym Morton,
Collins Ebozue and
Anthony Roderick set the tone in the 100m dash earning the first sweep of the day for NU. The middle-distance crew followed suit when
Connor Donovan,
Marc Rienas and
Cameron Kunde all finished within one second of each other in the 800m finals.
Kwame Fordwor and
Chris Jewett got in on the action along with
Collins Ebozue who earned his second silver with the trio taking the 200m by storm.
Â
THE GOLD STANDARD
The Huskies came away from the meet with nine gold medals, earning seven on the track and two in the field.
Â
Rookies
Travis Kartz,
David Adams and
Naukym Morton captured the first CAA gold of their careers in the pole vault, 400m hurdles and 100m dash. Kartz is the first Husky to win the event since 2009 while Adams becomes the third Husky to take the 400m title and Morton keeps the 100m crown in NU possession after
Kyle Darrow claimed victory at the 2016 championship.
Â
In the 800m run, Northeastern has begun to build a dynasty, winning the CAA title four of the last five years with champions including Eric Jenkins,
Paul Duffey and
Marc Rienas.
Connor Donovan took home his first career CAA Gold in the event after shaving more than two-seconds off his prelim time during the final heat.
Â
Senior captain
Kwame Fordwor picked up two gold medals on Northeastern's victories in the 200m and 4x100m relay. The 200m title was transferred from teammate Darrow to Fordwor and has only been claimed by NU one other time. Fordwor's anchor leg on the 4x100m for the second straight year earned the Red and Black their third consecutive gold in the race. Fordwor was joined by
Naukym Morton,
Anthony Roderick and
Collins Ebozue on the relay. Overall, Fordwor contributed 14 points to the Husky effort not including an additional 10 from the relay squad.
Â
Additional gold medals were earned by
Nick Fofana in the decathlon,
Jordan O'Dea in the 3000m steeplechase and
Chris Jewett in the 400m dash. As a sophomore, Jewett finished with a similar time (47.91) to three-time champion
Donovan Henry, just one second off the program record. Fofana claimed his second straight gold in the decathlon, just 100 points shy of his own meet record and O'Dea clinched gold in the steeplechase for the first time since
Lucy Young in 2014. Fofana contributed the second most points on the team with 19 while Jewett added 16 and O'Dea pitched in 10.
Â
STERLING SILVER
Adding to the medal count were 11 different Huskies who earned 11 silver medals.
Â
Collins Ebozue was awarded the first CAA medals of his career with second place finishes in the 100m and 200m dashes. His 16 points ties for fourth most on the team with classmate
Chris Jewett.
Eric Mellusi also earned a pair of silvers en route to his team-leading 20 point outing. The junior cracked the 50m mark in the hammer and discus for the first time in his career with throws of 56.99m and 52.13m.
Â
In the field,
Kurt Robakiewicz and
Chris Manning collected 16 points for Northeastern with second place finishes in the triple jump and high jump with marks of 13.65m and 1.98m. Robakiewicz improved on his third place finish in the event from 2016.
Â
Distance duo
Paul Duffey and
Marc Rienas raked in a pair of silver medals with their performances in the 1500m and 800m finals clocking 3:46.57 and 1:53.65 running up a total of 20 points.
Â
In the sprints,
David Adams and
Patrice Williams represented Northeastern in the 100m hurdles and 400m dash finals. Both competitors raced just 0.18 seconds off the top times in their respective heats.
Â
The final CAA silver was earned by
Austin Lin,
Lucas Holt,
David Adams and
Chris Jewett in the 4x400m relay. The team finished in 3:19.71, slashing over two seconds off their entry time.
Â
BIG TIME BRONZE
During the two-day championship, Northeastern notched 10 bronze performances, six in the field and four on the track.
Â
Anthony Roderick,
Cameron Kunde and
Chris Jewett rounded out Northeastern's event sweeps with bronze medal performances in the 100m dash, 800m and 200m. In his first CAA medal race, Kunde fired on all cylinders to chop two seconds off his prelim time to score his first outdoor collegiate points in the meet.
Â
Austin Lin also contributed his first individual points with a 48.20 finish in the 400m, besting his prelim run by 1.56 seconds.
Â
Priscilla Senoo was the third highest scoring member for the NU women resulting from her bronze finish in the shot put. Her 14.05m throw marked a personal best and put her on the CAA podium for the first time in her career.
Â
Matthew Richards improved his performance from 2016, finding his way to the CAA podium with a decathlon score of 5673.
Â
Kurt Robakiewicz collected his second medal of the championship with a 6.65m long jump mark, stepping up to the podium for the first time in the event.
Â
Erica Belvit and
Connor Fugere each earned bronze in the hammer throw with marks of 54.95m and 54.97m respectively.
Ryan Kim added a bronze in the shot put, throwing just three feet short of the top mark.
