GOLD RIVER, Calif. – On the final day of the IRA Championships, the Northeastern men's rowing team concluded its season with a victory in the petite final of the first varsity, finishing seventh in the nation for the second straight season. The Huskies, seeded ninth entering the championships, finished two spots ahead of its seed in the first varsity, while the third varsity finished on its seed in eighth and the second varsity 11th under sunny skies and calm conditions on Lake Natoma. As a team, the Huskies finished eighth with 125 points in the Ten Eyck standings.

In the first varsity, it was the Huskies and Dartmouth out quickly jockeying for the top two spots through 500-meters before the Big Green took a third of a length lead on Northeastern entering the second 500 as NU held off Syracuse by a third of a length in third. Approaching the midway mark of the race, NU would overtake Dartmouth for first, and continued to up its stroke rate to 36 strokes per minute to maintain its advantage. As the crews entered the final 500-meters, Northeastern increased its lead to win the petite by two seconds at 5:36.576.

Brown came out early in the second varsity petite to take a half length lead on Northeastern as the Bears, Huskies and Cornell had the top three spots, respectively, at the 500-meter mark. The Big Red would overtake Northeastern for second at the midway mark of the race as Brown continued to set the pace for the rest of the crews. Approaching the final 500-meters, it was still the Bears in the lead with the second through fifth places all up for grabs. Pennsylvania, though, flew through the final strokes to steal the second spot while the Huskies dropped to fifth in the race to finish the season 11th in the nation with a time of 5:56.791.

Northeastern and Boston University went stroke for stroke in the third varsity petite, with the Huskies bow ball out in front early. The Terriers would increase its stroke rate in the first 500 to take the lead entering the middle 1000-meters. It became a two boat race with NU and BU battling as the crews built a half length lead on the rest of the field. While the Terriers would establish a full length lead on Northeastern at the 900-meter mark, the Huskies continued to fight through the remaining 1000-meters. In the third 500, NU cut into the Terrier advantage to come within two seats entering the final 250-meters, but Boston University was able to hold on and win the petite at 5:52.883 while the Huskies crossed the line at 5:54.189.

This was Northeastern's 50th appearance at the IRAs. Since 1965, Northeastern has appeared in all but three of the prestigious national championship regattas. The Red and Black has captured three first-place finishes at the national championship regatta—two by the varsity eight (1988, 1991) and one by the second varsity eight (1979). In total, Northeastern has appeared in 61 IRA grand finals (varsity eight: 20, second varsity eight: 24, third varsity eight: 1, freshman eight: 15, open four: 1).

It was also the 16th appearance for head coach John Pojednic at the IRA Regatta. Under Pojednic, the Northeastern varsity has made the grand final six times, the second varsity four times, the third varsity once and the first freshman three times, including a bronze-medal performance in 2012, and the open four once.
