Highlights
BOSTON – With 10 offensive contributors and a well-rounded defensive effort, the Northeastern women's basketball team powered its way to the 64-46 victory against William & Mary on Sunday afternoon during the Huskies' We Back Pat Game at Cabot Center.
Â
Claudia Ortiz scored a game high, 19 points, to lead Northeastern (9-9, 4-3 CAA), which moved into a tie for fourth place in the CAA standings with Elon. Ortiz stuffed the stat sheets with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, also accounting for three of the Huskies' six 3-point field goals.
Â
With 14 points and 12 rebounds,
Gabby Giacone earned the ninth double-double of her career and third against William & Mary (12-6, 3-4 CAA). Giacone added two assists, three steals, and two blocks to her final tally, sharing the NU post with her teammates
Loren Lassiter (two points, four rebounds) and
Jasmine Braswell (two points).
Â
Jess Genco reached double digits in scoring (11 points) upon hitting the arguable game-clinching jumper during the fourth quarter, capping a string of five straight points for Northeastern that widened the Huskies' lead to 18 points (58-40) with 3:34 remaining in regulation. The junior point guard dished out seven assists and recorded one of her squad's season high, 13 steals.
Â
Shannon Todd supported Northeastern's cause to the tune of eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, draining a halfcourt buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter to send the Huskies into the locker room with a 33-23 lead.
Stella Clark,
Jasmin Watson,
Zoe Zwerling, and
Samantha Michel all ended the day in the score column as well, with Clark and Watson each registering two steals apiece.
Â
Northeastern held William & Mary to its lowest field goal percentage of the entire 2017-18 season (31 percent). Bianca Boggs led the Tribe with 15 points and six rebounds, Victoria Reynolds contributed 11 points and two steals, and Abby Rendle charted five points, 15 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks.
Â
DECIDING FACTOR
Â
The Huskies plagued the Tribe in turnover margin, forcing eight out of William & Mary during the first quarter alone. By game's end, Northeastern had coaxed 22 turnovers from the hands of the Tribe – 13 of which were credited as NU steals – while sporting a +9 advantage in the category. The Huskies capitalized on their defensive success, turning in a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Â
Northeastern's well-executed ball movement also proved to be too much for William & Mary to handle as the Huskies assisted on 17 of their 21 made field goals. NU drained four more 3-point field goals (six) than the Tribe (two) and also outgained William & Mary, 16-8, at the free throw line.
Â
