Highlights
BOSTON – Facing a 3-1 deficit entering the third period, the No. 8/9 Northeastern men's hockey team (15-6-4, 11-4-2) clawed its way back with three goals in the final frame, including the game-tying strike from
Adam Gaudette with 40 seconds left in regulation, to force a 4-4 draw with No. 10 Providence (16-8-3, 9-5-3) on Friday night at Matthews Arena.
The tie, coupled with a Boston College loss at UMass Lowell, moves Northeastern back into a tie for first place in the Hockey East standings with 24 points.
Gaudette led the charge with three points on the night (two goals, one assist) to maintain his lead in the national scoring race with 39 points (19 goals, 20 assists). He potted the game-tying goal after the Huskies won a puck battle along the right wall, allowing
Dylan Sikura to fling a pass across to Gaudette in the left dot for the one-timer past PC goalie Hayden Hawkey (20 saves) to send the game to overtime.
Providence, which outshot NU 33-24 and led 3-1 through 40 minutes thanks to a pair of goals from Scott Conway and another from Ben Mirageas, made it a 4-2 game just 26 seconds after Gaudette's first of the night when Vimal Sukumaran chipped one over NU goaltender
Cayden Primeau (29 saves).
But the Huskies continued to fight, and brought it back to one with 8:33 to play on
Eric Williams' third of the year off a
Zach Solow (two assists) face-off win, and Gaudette leveled the score in the final minute to force the stalemate.
The Huskies and Friars will meet again tomorrow night in the series finale at Schneider Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
