PROVIDENCE -- Freshman
Cayden Primeau stopped 27 shots for the No. 8 Northeastern men's hockey team (15-7-4, 11-5-2), but an overtime goal from Greg Printz sent the No. 10 Providence Friars (17-8-3, 10-5-3) to a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.
Primeau was sensational for the Huskies throughout the game and he kept the Huskies in the game late with his nine saves in the third period. Sophomore
Matt Filipe ended a seven-game goal drought with his fifth goal of the season in the second period. Junior
Eric Williams set up Filipe for the goal to collect his fifth point in the last five games, and blocked a game-high five shots.
After a scoreless first period, Filipe put the visitors ahead less than two minutes into the second period when he took a stretch pass from Williams entering the attacking zone before lifting a backhand over the pad of PC goaltender Hayden Hawkey (18 saves) for the 1-0 lead.
Providence, though, would come back and level the score at one less than seven minutes later on Kasper Bjorkqvist's 11th of the year when Brian Pinho's shot from the left side ricocheted off a slew of bodies before catching Bjorkqvist and sneaking past Primeau to make it 1-1.
The score remained the same until Printz netted the game winner two minutes into the extra frame when he tucked home his fourth of the year after Jason O'Neill's initial bid stayed out in front of the crease and barely under the pad of Primeau, allow Printz to scoop it up and bury it.
Northeastern will be back in action on Friday night when the Huskies return home to host New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
