PHILADELPHIA – Despite keeping par with Drexel during the majority of Sunday's game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Northeastern women's basketball team lost a closely contested battle against the Dragons, coming up on the short end of the 58-50 result.
Â
Jess Genco and
Claudia Ortiz co-led Northeastern (10-10, 5-4 CAA) with 13 points apiece, while
Gabby Giacone finished third in scoring with 11 points.
Shannon Todd tallied six points and six rebounds, while
Loren Lassiter led NU on the glass with nine boards.
Drexel (16-5, 8-1 CAA) won its sixth straight game, receiving 11 points from both Megan Marecic and Kelsi Lidge. Sara Woods tacked on 10 points for the Dragons as well.
DECIDING FACTOR
Â
Northeastern went on an 8-0 run near the beginning of the fourth quarter to take a 46-45 lead, forcing Drexel into taking a called timeout with 6:50 remaining in regulation. Out of the Dragons' timeout, the Huskies successfully limited Drexel to a single shot attempt courtesy of
Gabby Giacone's block of Sara Woods. Giacone's block led to
Claudia Ortiz's jumper at the other end of the floor, which peaked Northeastern's scoring streak at 10 unanswered points and put NU in front, 48-45, with 6:04 to go.
Â
However, Megan Marecic's 3-point response, coupled with Aubree Brown's three-point play at the expense of Giacone, allowed the Dragons to regain the lead at 51-48 with 3:40 left on the clock. Northeastern pulled the score to as close as three points (53-50) with 45 seconds remaining, but Drexel closed out the game from the foul line, where the Dragons went five-for-six down the stretch.
