NEWARK, Del. – Finding itself in an early, 2-0 deficit against Delaware on Saturday night, the Northeastern men's soccer team battled back to nearly net two goals during the final 15 minutes of regulation, despite scoring just once as the Huskies were handed the 2-1 defeat by the Blue Hens at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Â
Four nights after having his penalty kick goal against Harvard nulled by the cancellation of Tuesday's match,
Moustapha Samb found the back of the net for Northeastern (5-8-1, 2-4-1 CAA), cleaning up the Huskies' corner kick during the 79th minute.
Martin Nygaard followed his corner from the left side with a second cross that arrived at the back post, where Samb side-heeled his third goal of the season at point-blank range.
Â
Delaware (5-9-1, 4-3-1 CAA) struck first during the fourth minute, when Soren Frost played Ryan Mertz's header over
Adam Gostomelsky from six yards away. Within 10 minutes of Frost's goal, the Blue Hens had tacked on another goal from close range as Timo Hummrich headed John Schroeder's entry ball through in the aftermath of Noa Benninga's corner from the right flag.
Â
Gostomelsky recorded two saves during his first career Northeastern appearance and his first start.
