Huskies dominate Terriers during statement, 81-51 win

BOSTON – Setting a dominant tone during its 2018-19 regular season opener against Boston University, the Northeastern women's basketball team outhustled its crosstown rival on Friday afternoon while confidently shooting 52 percent from the field as the Huskies cruised to the 30-point win against the Terriers, 81-51 at Cabot Center.
 
Sophomore guard Stella Clark led Northeastern (1-0) during its wire-to-wire win with 19 bench points, knocking down each of her four 3-point attempts. Clark rattled in seven of her eight shots from the field while pairing her six rebounds with two assists and a steal.
 
Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention forward Gabby Giacone scored nine of the Huskies' first 11 points of the game as NU motored its way to the 22-16 lead by the end of the first quarter. Giacone finished the day with 15 points on seven-for-nine shooting, tallying four rebounds.
 
Northeastern commanded the paint against Boston University (0-1), outgaining the Terriers, 36-20, inside the lane. The Huskies also trumped BU in bench scoring (40-13) and second-chance points (22-7).
 
Alexis Hill's buzzer-beating layup to end the second quarter provided NU with a nine-point halftime lead (37-28) and momentum, which was converted into the Huskies' 9-0 scoring run during the opening two minutes of the second half. Northeastern proceeded to outscore the Terriers, 24-4, during the third quarter to put the game out of reach before the final stanza had commenced.
 
Jess Genco played just 22 minutes for the Huskies, scoring 10 points while dishing out five assists.
 
Twelve Huskies entered Friday's game, yielding four first-year debuts: those of freshmen Katie May (eight points, 31 minutes), Alexis Hill (five points, five rebounds) and Kendall Currence (five points), and redshirt-junior transfer Rachel Aho.
 
Lauren Spearman led Boston University with 14 points.

• Northeastern's 30-point winning margin against Boston University ranks as the program's second-largest victory during series history (76 meetings) behind the Huskies' 33-point win on Nov. 13, 2015 (77-44).
