PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by senior point guard
Jess Genco's masterful 3-point shooting display – during which she broke her own program record with nine perimeter makes – the Northeastern women's basketball team preserved its undefeated record by defeating Providence, 65-59, on Saturday, simultaneously matching the program's longest winning streak at nine games (set by its 1998-99 team).
Genco – who became the Huskies' first player to ever hit eight 3-pointers during a game on Nov. 28 at Florida – shot nine-for-12 behind the arc on Saturday against the Friars. The NU pacemaker led all scorers with 31 points, tying her career scoring high in addition to finishing with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Shannon Todd assured that Northeastern (9-0) started strong during its first outing since the Huskies' Dec. 5 win at Fairfield. The junior guard notched nine consecutive points for NU during the first quarter, registering 12 of her 14 points during the first half.
Gabby Giacone earned the second double-double of her senior campaign and the 13th of her collegiate career, pairing 11 points with 11 rebounds. Together with Genco and Todd, the trio of Huskies accounted for 86 percent of the team's offense.
Chanell Williams led Providence (5-4) with 20 points, two rebounds and five steals while Jovana Nogic charted nine points and four steals. Nine players represented the Friars in the scoring column.
Northeastern played in front during the majority of the neck-and-neck first half, which witnessed the Huskies carry the 33-30 lead into the locker room.
NU created its separation during the third quarter, which ended after Genco had buried four consecutive 3-point attempts. Upon hitting her record-setting, ninth 3-pointer with 8:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, she had been responsible for generating each of the Huskies' previous 17 points.
Reminiscent of the two teams' Nov. 2017 meeting at Cabot Center, Providence staged a convincing fourth quarter comeback, trimming the NU lead down to two points, 61-59, with 1:19 left in regulation. However,
Stella Clark denied the Friars a look at the win during the closing minutes, scoring the game's final four points at the free throw line.
