BOSTON –
Shannon Todd's game-winning, 3-point basket as time expired on Sunday at Cabot Center capped the Northeastern women's basketball team's comeback from nine points down during the fourth quarter against Massachusetts as the Huskies stole the 53-52 victory to improve to 7-0 – tying the program record for best regular season start.
Despite shooting 29 percent from the field, Northeastern (7-0) converted each of its final two 3-point attempts during the final 15.7 seconds of regulation to complete the come-from-behind win.
With the Huskies trailing, 50-47,
Jess Genco buried the first such try from the left wing, leveling the game at 50-50 with 11.3 seconds left on the clock. Although Asia McCoy answered with a transition layup for Massachusetts (5-4), the visitors left 4.4 seconds remaining in the quarter – enough time for Genco to race up the length of the floor and find Todd open on the right wing, where the junior knocked down the decisive jumper.
Northeastern closed the game with a 20-10 scoring run during the final 4:07 of the fourth quarter.
Genco posted 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists to lead the undefeated Huskies. Todd's game-winner brought her level in scoring with
Stella Clark,
Ayanna Dublin and
Gabby Giacone at nine points apiece. Dublin also contributed nine rebounds and four assists to help Northeastern's cause.
McCoy double-doubled to lead UMass, coupling 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica George led the Minutewomen with 15 points while Destiney Philoxy registered eight points and eight rebounds.
NU led three times during the first half at 6-5, 8-7 and 11-10, but played from behind during the remainder of the competition. The Huskies took care of the basketball during the second half, turning their -2 turnover margin at halftime into a +1 advantage at the final horn.
