WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite housing four double-digit scorers and receiving a double-double performance from
Loren Lassiter, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to earn the split of its CAA road trip through Virginia on Sunday as the Huskies suffered a 71-53 setback against William & Mary at Kaplan Arena.
Â
Lassiter's 11-point, 11-rebound effort earned the NU senior her first career double-double during her 99th collegiate appearance. At one moment, she had accounted for seven consecutive points for the Huskies, including the final five points of the first half that brought Northeastern (12-12, 7-6 CAA) within 12 points (39-27) at the intermission.
Â
Shannon Todd led the Huskies with 13 points, shooting three-for-four from downtown.
Claudia Ortiz matched Todd's trio of 3-pointers en route to finishing with 11 points and two rebounds, while
Stella Clark rounded out Northeastern's quartet of double-digit scorers, totaling 10 points in addition to five rebounds and three assists.
Â
William & Mary (16-8, 7-6 CAA) shot 49 percent from the field and was led by its two 19-point scorers, Victoria Reynolds and Bianca Boggs. Abby Rendle double-doubled to the tune of 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Tribe, also registering three assists, four blocks, and two steals.
Â
Northeastern experienced a couple of scoring lulls throughout the game. Ortiz's 3-pointer with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter provided the Huskies with an early, 13-12 lead, but stood as their only basket until Lassiter's second quarter layup with 7:36 to go halted the Tribe's string of 16 unanswered points. NU was also kept without a point during the opening 5:21 of the second half.
Â
Sunday's result mirrored the Huskies' 18-point victory against William & Mary at Cabot Center on Jan. 21. Both teams are now tied for fifth place in the CAA standings with three weekends remaining in the regular-season.
