BOSTON –
Vasa Pusica laid in the game-winning basket at the buzzer as the Northeastern men's basketball team ousted William & Mary 69-67 Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies controlled the lead for the majority of the ballgame before William & Mary hit back-to-back threes to take their first, and largest, lead of the afternoon with six-and-a-half minutes to go in the second half.
After five ties and four lead changes in the final six minutes, the ball was in Pusica's hands with a chance to win it and 5.3 seconds on the clock. The junior drove right into the paint, past Justin Pierce and tallied the game winning bucket as the Huskies notched their fifth-straight victory.
William & Mary had a chance to go ahead one possession before but a three from Matt Milon rattled out and Donnell Gresham came down with his third, and most important, rebound of the day. Gresham raced up the court,
Bill Coen immediately called a timeout, and the rest is history.
Pusica finished with 19 points on the day, just a point shy of tallying his fifth-straight 20-point effort, while adding six rebounds and six assists in the game.
Maxime Boursiquot finished the game 6-of-7 from the field with a season-high tying 13 points. The sophomore started the game off 5-of-5 getting his first 10 points in the first seven minutes of action. He was quiet in the second half until he stepped up and hit a clutch 3-pointer that put the Huskies ahead 67-65 with a minute and a half to go. Boursiquot also added a pair of assists and two steals on the day.
The Tribe were led by a 21-point effort from Milon, while Nathan Knight added 14 points and six rebounds, Pierce tallied 13 and seven and Connor Burchfield finished with 10 points on the day.
The Huskies used an 11-0 run, capped off by a Boursiquot layup from
Anthony Green (3-of-3 FG, 2-of-2 FT, eight points), to get out to an early 15-5 lead against the Tribe. The run was sparked by three William & Mary turnovers as well as a handful of misses. But the Tribe were able to fight their way back into the game and evened the score at 19-all midway through the first half.
Boursiquot netted a team-leading 10 first half points, while
Vasa Pusica added nine points in the first stanza capped by a trey with just over six minutes to go to give the Huskies an eight-point, 33-25 advantage.
The Huskies forced 10 William & Mary turnovers in the first half en route to a 37-34 halftime lead.
