BOSTON – Outscored in the paint, two-to-one, on Sunday afternoon at Cabot Center, the Northeastern women's basketball team had difficulty slowing down Elon, succumbing to the visitors' 60 percent shooting clip as the Huskies were defeated, 65-46.
Â
Despite the loss, Northeastern (13-13, 8-7 CAA) remained in sole possession of fifth place in the CAA standings. With two weekends left in the regular-season, the Huskies trail fourth-place Delaware (9-5 CAA) by one and a half games but own the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Blue Hens, 2-0. NU also leads sixth-place William & Mary (7-8 CAA) by one game.
Â
Northeastern's underclassmen led the Huskies in scoring on Sunday. Freshman guardÂ
Stella Clark was the lone NU player to score in double figures, totaling 13 points in addition to four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore forwardÂ
Jasmine Braswell posted a career high, nine points, behind Clark's team lead, also securing four rebounds.
Â
Malaya Johnson led Elon (19-7, 11-4 CAA) with 20 points, shooting 10-for-12 from the field. Ra'Shika White followed Johnson with 12 points, while Shay Burnett flirted with a triple-double, tallying eight points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
Â
Northeastern grabbed a 2-0 lead during the opening half-minute of play, but went more than eight minutes before registering its next field goal, surrendering 11 unanswered points to the Phoenix. However, the Huskies remained competitive, generating nine turnovers from their opponents during the first quarter while trimming Elon's lead to 13-9 before the midway point of the first half.
Â
The Phoenix started the second quarter on an 8-0 courtesy of their four-for-four shooting, prompting an NU timeout with 7:17 remaining in the half. Clark's 3-pointer with 3:59 left before halftime brought the Huskies within six points of Elon at 24-18, which would be as close as Northeastern would come during the remainder of the contest.
NU collectively shot 30 percent from the floor and trailed the Phoenix, 27-17, in points off turnovers, despite forcing 21 turnovers out of Elon during the game.Â
