Jess Genco's team high, 19 points, that vaulted the junior point guard into the program's 1,000-point scoring club, the Northeastern women's basketball team put forth a convincing postseason effort against Yale on Thursday night at Cabot Center, despite concluding its season with a 68-58 loss to the Bulldogs during the first round of the 2018 Women's Basketball Invitational.
Â
Entering the evening 11 points shy of the four-digit milestone, Genco began the game shooting three-for-three from the floor, single-handedly running the Huskies out to an 8-7 lead courtesy of her back-to-back 3-point makes. With 4:49 remaining in regulation, she buried her third 3-pointer of the night to move into 1,000-point territory, becoming the 20th player in program history to achieve the feat. Genco rounded out her junior-season finale with four assists and two rebounds.
Â
Northeastern (16-15) shot 37 percent from the field during its first-ever WBI appearance and first postseason trip since advancing to the 1999 NCAA tournament. The Huskies nearly matched Yale (16-13) in field goals, 23-22, yet surrendered a 14-6 spread to the Bulldogs at the free throw line.
Â
Jasmine Braswell knocked down each of her five field goal attempts en route to posting a career high, 10 points, in addition to five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
Stella Clark matched Braswell's 10 points, also contributing four rebounds and two steals.
Â
Northeastern and Yale played the final two and a half minutes of the first quarter stalemated at 12-12, before the Bulldogs doubled up the Huskies, 16-8, during the start of the second quarter to build a 28-20 lead with 5:22 remaining. Yale incremented its first half edge to as high as 13 points (33-20) near the 3:45 mark, later carrying a 35-25 lead into the locker room.
Â
Shannon Todd offloaded each of her five points during the third quarter as NU began to charge back, reducing the gap to seven points, 41-34, with 3:09 left in the period. Despite a 20-point fourth quarter, Northeastern was unable to overcome the deficit as the Bulldogs held onto the 10-point win.
Â
Yale received 23 points from its All-Ivy League Honorable Mention forward Jen Berkowitz, who shot eight-for-14 from the floor. Roxy Barahman followed Berkowitz's pace with 12 points and seven assists, while Tori Andrew accounted for 11 of the Bulldogs' 27 bench points.
