BOSTON – No. 9 Providence's Brandon Duhaime assisted on the game-tying goal with 1:51 remaining in the third period, and then scored the overtime winner midway through the extra session to hand the No. 7 Northeastern men's hockey team a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat on Friday in the Hockey East semifinals at TD Garden.

Freshman Austin Goldstein scored his first collegiate goal 3:03 into the third period to give Northeastern (23-9-5) a 2-1 lead, but the No. 9 Friars (23-10-4) were able to extend the contest to overtime when Duhaime set up Kasper Bjorqvist for the equalizer in the final two minutes of regulation.

"It was a great college hockey game," said Fernie Flaman Men's Hockey Coach Jim Madigan. "Two teams that worked hard and played hard, and we played them three times this year. All three games went to overtime. Unfortunately on our end, we've fallen on the wrong side of the ledger in two of those overtime games, and they're a good team."

After Providence drew first blood on a Vimal Sukumaran strike 8:57 into the game, the Huskies' Hobey Baker duo of Adam Gaudette and Dylan Sikura went to work to tie the contest late in the second stanza.

On a shorthanded break, Gaudette dropped a pass back to Sikura for a shot that eluded PC netminder Hayden Hawkey (38 saves) from the low left circle to give the senior his 21st goal of the campaign, tying his single-season career high. The assist extended Gaudette's point-streak to 10 straight games and gave him 60 points on the year on an even 30 goals and 30 assists.

Freshman netminder Cayden Primeau did his part to keep Northeastern in the game from start to finish, making 31 saves, including 13 in the third period.

The Huskies will learn their NCAA tournament fate on Sunday when the Division-I men's ice hockey selection show commences at 12 p.m. on ESPNU.
