BOSTON – The Northeastern men's rowing team opens up the 2018 campaign this weekend when the Huskies travel to San Diego for a pair of races. NU will take on Penn and Yale on Saturday morning before coming back the following day to race against Stanford, Yale, California, Penn and Navy.

Saturday's race with the Quakers will be for the 48th Burk Cup. Northeastern, which last captured the cup in 2016, will be looking to knock off Penn for the second straight meeting after last season's race was canceled due to weather. Northeastern will row two eights boats on Sunday morning, with the first varsity at 12:12 p.m. (ET) and the second varsity at 1 p.m.

First contested in 1970, the Burk Cup has resided at Henderson Boathouse in 11 of the last 14 seasons, and 24 of 46 overall. On the Schuylkill, Northeastern has won 11 cups, and five of the last eight.

The Burk Cup was placed into competition by "Friends of Pennsylvania Rowing" to honor Joseph Burk W'34, a member of Penn crew from 1931 to 1934 and coach of the Quakers from 1950 to 1969. While at Penn, Burk was a four-year member of the rowing team and captain of the varsity eight in his senior year. He was a two-time winner of the prestigious Diamond Single Sculls at Henley in 1938 and 1939, the first American to win twice, and was also the singles champion at the American and Canadian National regattas from 1937 to 1939. In 1939, Burk earned the James E. Sullivan Memorial Trophy as the nation's top amateur athlete.
