PHILADELPHIA – Despite being led by
Jess Genco's 23 points and record-tying seven 3-pointers, the fourth-seeded Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to navigate past fifth-seeded Delaware during Thursday's quarterfinal round of the 2018 CAA tournament (hosted by Drexel), exiting the event courtesy of a 61-50 defeat.
Â
Genco led both sides in scoring, bookending her afternoon with a trio of 3-point baskets during the first and fourth quarters. The junior point guard's seven 3-pointers tied both her career high and the program record, in addition to setting the NUÂ record for most 3-point field goals made during the postseason. She also totaled four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Â
Shannon Todd and
Gabby Giacone posted identical, 12-point scoring lines for Northeastern (16-14, 11-7 CAA), which had swept Delaware (19-11, 11-7 CAA) during the regular season to earn the No. 4 seed on tiebreakers. Todd knocked down three 3-pointers and tallied four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Giacone led the Huskies with six rebounds.
Â
Northeastern experienced its third lowest field goal percentage of the 2017-18 season on Thursday, shooting 28 percent from the field. The Huskies were whistled for 23 personal fouls that yielded 30 Delaware free throw attempts, yet were on the receiving end of only nine foul calls and in turn, attempted just four free throws.
Â
NU effectively limited Nicole Enabosi, the 2017-18 CAA Player of the Year, to four field goals, but the Blue Hens' forward tacked on eight points from the line to finish with a double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds). Abby Gonzales scored 13 points for Delaware, while Samone DeFreese registered 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
Â
Giacone's back-to-back baskets during the final 30 seconds of the first quarter allowed the Huskies to tie the Blue Hens, 17-17, at the quarter break. However, Northeastern would endure a cold spell during the second quarter, receiving its next points on Todd's 3-pointer during the Huskies' penultimate possession of the first half.
Â
NU trailed, 25-20, at halftime and cut Delaware's lead to 29-25 with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter, but surrendered nine unanswered points to the Blue Hens, who built a 13-point lead (38-25) with 4:06 left in the period.
Â
Delaware led by as many as 18 points (50-32) with 5:19 to play in regulation before the Huskies managed to whittle the Blue Hens' lead down to single digits during the closing minutes.
Northeastern had set a program record for CAA regular-season wins (11) during the 2017-18 campaign. The Huskies' 16 overall wins are the most NU has achieved under the leadership of fourth-year head coach
Kelly Cole.
