ORONO, Maine –
The No. 12/11 Northeastern men's hockey team (13-4-1, 7-2-1) struck three times in a span of six minutes in the opening period and held off a late Maine (7-10-2, 3-4-2) surge to earn the complete team victory on Friday night at Alfond Arena, 3-2.

The win gives the Huskies nine victories in their last 10 games and moves Northeastern to within one point of first place in the Hockey East standings. NU also improves to 7-2-0 in one-goal games this season and 8-1-0 away from home, an .889 winning percentage that is the second best in the NCAA.

Northeastern received goals from Brandon Hawkins, Patrick Schule and Matt Filipe on the night, while Tyler Madden added two assists and Cayden Primeau made 19 saves in their first game back since competing for Team USA at the World Junior Championships.

Northeastern bolted out to a 3-0 first period lead, scoring three times in six minutes, the first coming from Hawkins when he rifled home a cross-ice feed from Jeremy Davies after Madden dangled through the defense for an initial bid on goal. Madden went to work again four minutes later, keeping the puck on his string while eluding Maine defenders left and right before firing a shot on goal that Black Bear goaltender Jeremy Swayman (39 saves) stopped, but Schule was waiting on the doorstep to roof it home for his seventh of the year.

After Maine was issued a five-minute major and game misconduct for head butting, Northeastern's power play unit cashed in as Filipe buried his fourth of the season after battling at the net front to bang home the rebound off a shot by Liam Pecararo.

The Black Bears chipped away at the lead with a goal from Ryan Smith early in the second period before bringing it to a one-goal game late on a power play tally from Adam Dawe, but Northeastern weathered the storm late and won a defensive zone face-off in the final seconds to secure the win.

The Huskies and Black Bears will return to the ice tomorrow night in the series finale at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
