ORONO, Maine – Behind 33 saves from sophomore
Cayden Primeau and two goals from
Brandon Hawkins, the No. 12/11 Northeastern men's hockey team (14-4-1, 8-2-1) used a full 60-minute team effort for the second straight night to earn a 4-0 victory on the road at Maine (7-11-2, 3-5-2) on Saturday at Alfond Arena.
The win moves Northeastern into second place in the Hockey East standings, setting up a matchup of the league's top two teams in next weekend's home-and-home set with Massachusetts. Tickets to Saturday's game at Matthews Arena (7 p.m.) are available by visiting
NUHuskies.com/tickets.
The win also gives Northeastern its first weekend sweep at Maine since the 2008-09 season and improves the Huskies to 9-1-0 away from home this season, the second most road victories in the NCAA.
Primeau was immense between the pipes all weekend long, finishing with 33 stops including 13 in the third period to move into a tie for third on Northeastern's all-time shutouts list (seven) after just 50 career starts.
After playing to a scoreless first period, Northeastern exploded for three goals in the first 4:32 of the second period, beginning with a snipe from
Zach Solow just 17 seconds into the frame, beating Maine goaltender Jeremy Swayman (25 saves) five-hole. Just three minutes later,
Liam Pecararo found the back of the net against his former team as the Huskies quickly transitioned up ice with
Grant Jozefek feeding
Julian Kislin joining the rush.
The Northeastern power play wasted no time in cashing in after Maine was called for a contact to the head penalty, with
Tyler Madden winning the ensuing face-off back to
Jeremy Davies, who dished it across to Hawkins in the left dot for a rocket one-timer home. Hawkins would add his second of the game early in the third period, finishing off a feed from
Lincoln Griffin.
Northeastern will be back in action next weekend when the Huskies battle No. 2 Massachusetts in a home-and-home set, beginning on Friday night in Amherst.
