BOSTON --
Northeastern men's hockey defenseman Jeremy Davies and goaltender Cayden Primeau have been nominated for the Hobey Baker award, which is awarded anually to the top player in NCAA Division I men's hockey. Fan voting, which is open until March 10, plays a role in narrowing down the nominee pool to ten candidates. The Huskies' assistant captain and starting netminder have played pivotal roles in leading Northeastern to its most successful start in program history, currently sitting at 14-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in Hockey East.

Returning First Team All-American Davies has assembled an impressive junior season thus far, notching four goals and 14 assists through 19 games, good for sixth among defensemen in points per game (1.00). Those numbers place Davies in a tie for 14th in points and tied for 15th in assists in the nation among defensemen.

Davies' 14 assists lead all Huskies, as he has become one of the Northeastern's best playmakers this season, especially on the power play. The blueliner's 10 (two goals, eight assists) power play points are a team best and good for a tie for eighth among all defensemen.

The Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec native plays in all game situations for the Huskies, logging the most time on ice per game among all skaters. In addition to his power play time, Davies is part of the Northeastern penalty killing unit that is 13thin the NCAA with an 85.2% success rate this season, including a 22-of-24 (91.7%) clip in the last nine games.

Primeau, only a sophomore, has already compiled quite the college resume. In his second campaign with Northeastern, he has posted a .923 save percentage and a 2.22 goals against average. The Huskies are 12-3-1 when Primeau is in net, which places him in a tie for fifth in the nation in wins. He's also seventh in the NCAA in winning percentage (.767) and tied for fifth with three shutouts. Primeau topped 30 saves three times this season, including a career-high 45 stops in a tie against Boston University earlier this season.

He is one of just three goaltenders in team history to record 30 wins in two seasons or fewer, and is already tied for third on Northeastern's all-time shutouts list (seven) after just 48 starts.

The three games Primeau missed for the Huskies were spent playing for the U.S. National Junior Team at the IIHF World Junior Championships. Primeau emerged as the team's top goaltender during the tournament, posting a 4-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record and earning a silver medal. The goaltender earned U.S. Player of the Game with a 34-save performance in their semifinal victory over Russia, and finished with a 1.61 GAA and .937 save percentage.

Northeastern is looking to become the just the third school to win the award in consecutive seasons after Adam Gaudette was named the Hobey Baker Award winner in 2018. Gaudette led the nation in scoring that season with 60 points (30 goals, 30 assists), and was the Hockey East Player of the Year and Walter Brown Award winner.

The Hobey Baker Award
Teamwork. Dedication. Integrity. Exceptional play. Humility. And, above all, character. These are the values that set the game of hockey, and those who play it, apart from any other. They are also the values that the Hobey Baker Award honors each year.

The most coveted award in collegiate hockey, the Hobey Baker Award is given to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player in the nation. Winners are chosen not for raw skill or stats or character alone, though those are important. They are selected for everything they do.

Candidates must:
    • Exhibit strength and character, both on and off the ice
    • Contribute to the integrity of the team
    • Display outstanding skills in all phases of the game
    • Show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship

Candidates must also comply with all NCAA rules, be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university, and complete 50% or more of the season.

The Hobey Baker Award was named for hockey legend and World War I veteran Hobey Baker. Universally recognized as the best amateur player in the United States, Baker was the ultimate gentleman sportsman, always playing the game with courage, honor, and humility.

Nominating and selection criteria
The selection process for the award is in three parts. First, the head coaches of NCAA Division I schools nominate the top three players in their league and the top three players in the nation. College hockey fans can also vote online at this time—and fan voting can be an important factor in the balloting outcome. Price Waterhouse Coopers tabulates the votes and the top 10 candidates are announced.

Voting then commences for the "Hobey Hat Trick," which is a narrowing of the field from ten players to three, from which the winner is selected. The primary voting in this part of the process is by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Selection Committee, a geographically balanced group of 27 individuals representing print and electronic sports media, college hockey coaches and officials, and NHL scouts. Fans may also vote online for their favorite candidate during this phase of the process.

After the three finalists for the award are announced ("Hobey Hat Trick"), the countdown begins toward the announcement of the award winner in a nationally televised ceremony.
