BOSTON – Trailing by as many as 14 points during the second half, the Northeastern women's basketball team clawed back to lead during the final minute of Friday's CAA game against Drexel, despite the Huskies succumbing to Bailey Greenberg's game-winning, buzzer-beater during their 61-59 loss at Cabot Center.
Â
Northeastern (12-4, 2-3 CAA) trailed the Dragons, 41-27, with 5:24 remaining in the third quarter and faced a nine-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter (48-39) before staging a 12-3 scoring run to pull even at 51-51 with 6:21 left in regulation.
Â
Drexel (10-5, 2-2 CAA) responded to
Ayanna Dublin's game-tying power drive by relying on its league-leading defense (now 47.4 points allowed per game), successfully keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard during the following three minutes.
Stella Clark's hustle plays helped NU turn its momentum, including a timely backcourt steal that led to the two
Shannon Todd free throws that put Northeastern ahead, 59-57, with 52 seconds remaining.
Â
After Greenberg had created the game's sixth tied score at 59-59, the Huskies were presented with a final possession with the shot clock turned off. Northeastern burned one of its timeouts with 7.2 seconds remaining, but was unable to produce a shot attempt during the aftermath as Keishana Washington recovered a steal with exactly 1.0 second to go.
Â
Upon Drexel advancing the ball to midcourt, Aubree Brown inbounded to Greenberg, who banked in her turnaround jumper as time expired.
Â
Clark led Northeastern with 15 points while
Shannon Todd and
Gabby Giacone finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Greenberg tallied 26 points to pace the Dragons.
