Buy Tickets To Saturday's Game At Matthews
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After the No. 8 Northeastern men's hockey team (15-6-1, 9-4-1) scored less than three minutes into the game, No. 14 Providence (14-7-4, 7-5-1) responded with three goals in a span of 6:26 to set the tone for a 4-1 Friar victory on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Cayden Primeau was peppered throughout the evening, making 34 saves to mark the fifth time this season the sophomore has made at least 30 saves in a game.
The Huskies drew first blood just 2:45 into the game when junior
Ryan Shea buried his first of the season, taking a cross-ice feed from
Brandon Hawkins off the boards before blasting a shot past Providence goaltender Hayden Hawkey (19 saves) for the early lead.
It was all Providence from there, though, as the Friars knotted the game at one seven minutes later on Jacob Bryson's fourth of the year on a shot that redirected off the skate of a Husky defender before sneaking past Primeau.
The Friars then struck twice in less than three minutes, both shorthanded markers. The first came from Kasper Bjorkqvist who potted his 11thof the year beating Primeau short side before Jason O'Neill replicated the play with his fourth of the season for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
The score would remain that way for most of the night despite Northeastern pressing hard in the third period looking to cut into the lead, but Providence was able to stave off the surge and tack on an empty netter from Greg Printz with 29.6 seconds to go.
The two teams will square off in the series finale on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. It will be Skating Strides Night, and the Huskies will be wearing commemorative pink jerseys that will be auctioned off in-game in support of Skating Strides initiatives.
