VANCOUVER – Northeastern's
Tyler Madden,
Cayden Primeau and coach
Jerry Keefe helped the United States National Junior Team to the silver medal at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships following a 3-2 loss to Finland in the gold medal game on Saturday night.
It marked the first time in team history that Northeastern had two players named to the final United States National Junior Team roster.
Team USA's (5-0-1-1/W-OTW-OTL-L) silver-medal finish continues its unprecedented medal streak in tournament play after winning gold in 2017 and earning bronze-medals in 2016 and 2018. The U.S. now has 12 medals in tournament play, including four gold medals (2004, 2010, 2013, 2017), two silver medals (1997, 2019) and six bronze medals (1986, 1992, 2007, 2011, 2016, 2018).
All three Huskies left their mark on the team throughout the tournament as Primeau emerged as the team's premier netminder, finishing the tournament with a 4-0-0-1 record along with a 1.61 goals against average and .937 save percentage that ranked fourth among all goalies. The Voorhees, N.J. native started each of the last four games, including all three games in the medal round. He was named the U.S. Player of the Game after steering aside 34 shots in the semifinal against Russia to lead Team USA to the gold medal game, and made 118 saves overall during the tournament
Madden, meanwhile, played in all six games and recorded three goals and one assist. He opened the tournament with the primary assist on the game-winning goal against Slovakia before finding the back of the net late in the game against Kazakhstan. Seeing time in all game situations throughout the tournament, the Deerfield Beach, Fla. native was named the U.S. Player of the Game against Finland after scoring the eventual game-winner and a power play strike in the final game of the preliminary round.
Keefe oversaw Team USA's power play during tournament play, a unit that went 25.93% (7-of-27) and was good for second among all teams behind only the Czech Republic.
"We knew from day one that this group had something special, and even though we didn't play the perfect game, it was almost enough," said Mike Hastings, head coach of the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team. "There's no doubt this stings, especially with the way we came back from a two-goal deficit, but there's a lot this group can be proud of in helping the United States earn a fourth-straight medal in this tournament. These players earned a medal for our country and it won't be the last. This is the future of USA Hockey and I think I speak for our nation when I say we're excited to see these players one day represent our country again and I have no doubt they'll one day bring gold home."
The trio will rejoin the Huskies this week and be back in action for a weekend set at Maine, beginning on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
