Recap
HOUSTON – Making its first competitive appearance since coming off the field at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional, the Northeastern baseball team remained tight on the heels of its Opening Day opponent, Houston Baptist, despite succumbing to a four-run eighth inning by the hosts that resulted in its 9-3 defeat at Husky Field.
Â
Junior shortstop
Scott Holzwasser reached base safely during each of his four plate appearances, barreling a fourth-inning leadoff triple to right center that positioned him to become Northeastern's first run of the game. Two batters later,
Ryan Solomon succeeded in driving home Holzwasser as the senior lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, halving the NU deficit at 2-1.
Â
Fifth-year senior right-hander
Tyler Brown received the Opening Day start for Northeastern (0-1), striking out five batters across four innings, although surrendering four runs on seven hits.
David Stiehl preserved the game's 4-1 score line through the end of the sixth inning, leaving the door open for Northeastern's two-run seventh inning.
Â
Corey DiLoreto began the rally by driving a leadoff double to center field for his first collegiate hit, completing his trip around the bases upon
Jake Rosen's immediate reply – an RBI double down the left field line. Rosen made his way home during the next two NU plate appearances, crossing the dish on
Jeff Costello's sacrifice fly to trim Northeastern's deficit to 4-3.
Â
Houston Baptist responded with a run during the bottom of the seventh inning as Trent Franson scored on
Kyle Murphy's bases-loaded wild pitch.
Â
Holzwasser's eighth-inning single allowed Northeastern to bring the tying run to the plate, but the opportunity was lost after
Kyle Peterson grounded into the inning-ending, 3-6 double play – the third of four twin-killings that Houston Baptist executed.
Â
Murphy was charged for four earned runs during the bottom of the eighth inning as the home team widened its grip on the season-opening result.
