Ben Malgeri Called Up By Detroit Tigers

BOSTON -- Former Northeastern University outfielder Ben Malgeri has been promoted to the Detroit Tigers from Triple A Toledo, and is set to become the 13th Husky to reach the Major League level.

One of 14 active minor leaguers who spent their collegiate career at Northeastern, Malgeri will be the second Husky to reach the MLB in as many years, after the debut of Cam Schlittler for the New York Yankees last season on July 9th, 2025. Malgeri will be the first Husky position player to debut in the majors since Jason Vosler debuted for the San Francisco Giants on April 24th, 2021, pinch-hitting against the Miami Marlins.

Drafted in the 18th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Malgeri has made 531 appearances for the Tigers organization in the past five seasons, with stops at Low-A Lakeland, High-A West Michigan, AA Erie, and AAA Toledo, starting off the 2026 season in AAA. In his current stint with the AAA Mud Hens, he holds a .296 batting average in 250 at-bats, with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases, posting a .920 OPS. His 65 games with Toledo this season have firmly established him as one of the top offensive performers in the International League.

Malgeri played for Northeastern in 2021, posting a .280 batting average in 45 games, with seven home runs, 28 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He posted a .458 slugging percentage and a .358 on-base percentage in his one season as a Husky. He was named the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2021, leading the tournament with five home runs – including a game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning against CAA Pitcher of the Year Landen Roupp to send the game into extra innings – as Northeastern won its first-ever CAA Tournament title.

The Detroit Tigers host the New York Yankees on Tuesday night at Comerica Park at 6:40 p.m. ET. Malgeri will bat ninth and play right field, per the Tiger's lineup announcement on social media.
