BOSTON – Despite carrying a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against Hofstra, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to hold off the visitors' charge as the Pride stole the 63-62 victory at Cabot Center courtesy of Sica Cuzic's three-point play with 2.4 seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
After shooting 47 percent from the field through three quarters of play, Northeastern (15-10, 5-9 CAA) endured a frustrating cold spell during the fourth quarter, where the Huskies funneled in just one of their 16 field goal attempts. NU scored nine of its 11 fourth quarter points at the free throw line, but came out on the wrong side of the period's 25-11 scoring margin that yielded Hofstra (8-18, 2-12 CAA) the win.
Â
Jess Genco and
Shannon Todd combined to lead Northeastern with 14 points apiece. Genco matched three rebounds with three assists while Todd added three rebounds, an assist and four steals.
Â
Ayanna Dublin contributed 13 points and six rebounds to the Huskies' cause, shooting seven-for-eight at the foul line.
Gabby Giacone accounted for the bulk of Northeastern's 37 rebounds (+5), bringing down the game high, nine boards.
Â
After NU had established the 34-26 halftime lead, the Huskies opened the second half with a 6-0 scoring run, racing out to the 14-point advantage (40-26) and forcing Hofstra into a called timeout at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter.
Â
Ana Hernandez Gil played a key role in the Pride's fourth quarter comeback, triggering back-to-back 3-pointers inside two minutes remaining to give Hofstra its first lead of the game at 58-57. Despite Dublin and Clark combining to shoot three-for-four at the foul line down the stretch, Cuzic drew the and-one whistle on her game-tying basket during the closing seconds, hitting the ensuing free throw to creep Hofstra in front, 63-62.
Â
Shannon Todd's last-second inbound pass was intercepted by the Pride, sealing the game's result.
Â
Hofstra's Boogie Brozoski finished with 20 points to lead all scorers.
