Women capture sixth consecutive New England title

The women finished first and men second at the New England Championships over the weekend.

BOSTON -- For the sixth consecutive season, the women's track and field team has taken home a first-place finish at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships. The men's team took second-place with 115 points behind only Connecticut. 

The women's convincing win was highlighted by nine personal best performances and three first-place finishes. Khailah Griffin's performances in the 60m and 200m earned her two new PRs, and two bronze medals, with finishes of 7.73 and 24.96, respectively. Griffin also jumped a whopping 5.84m in the long jump for a season best performance. Patrice Williams nabbed a season-best time in the 200m, finishing slightly ahead of Griffin for a silver medal at 24.85. 

Zoe Taitel continued her streak of season-bests, finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 13.87m, behind Leeyan Redwood who took second with her 14.31m toss. The Huskies dominated the weight throw as Erica Belvit's 19.53m gave her a gold medal and a career best performance. Monae Cooper took second place with a 17.73m throw.  Abigail Cousens also recorded a PR in the weight throw with 14.95m while Lauren Swanson nabbed a season long throw of 15.74m. 

In her performance in the 200m preliminary round, Katie Hanlon's 25.94 dash time gave her a new personal-best while her 1:14.21 500m finals time, earned her a bronze medal and a new season-best time. 

In the distance category, Sydney Salas nabbed an impressive first-place finish in the 3000m with her personal-best time of 9:50.99. Bridget Foote, Louiza Wise and Aparna Alavilli took home first, second and third, respectively, in the 5000m as Wise and Alavilli ran their season-best times. 

Julia Marshall had a successful day on Friday as the only Husky competing in the pentathlon. Her final score of 3196 put her in seventh place and served as her personal best for her career. Notably, she ran a season-best time of 2:30.02 in the 800m and nabbed a PR of 1.54m in the high jump.

In their second-place finish, the men's team found success in many places on the track. With seven men competing in the 5000m, five of them recorded their personal best times. Coming in seventh-place, Ben Weingart nabbed a sub-15 minute time of 14:58.96, closley followed by eighth-place Matthew Schaefer who clocked in at 15:01.46. Steve Flanagan, Luke Novak and Zachary Jarnagin each tabbed personal bests at 15:21.09, 15:27.20 and 15:31.91, respectively. 

Andrew Cannistraci and Spencer McKeough took care of business in the shot put circle taking home gold and bronze, respectively. Canistracci's first-place finish was thanks to his 17.14m throw while McKeough threw a personal best, 16.80m. 

Donatien Djero showed speed with his season-best performances in the 60m and 200m dash. Djero earned gold in both events, clocking in at 6.75 and 21.72. 

Kurt Robakiewicz had a successful weekend as the solo competitor in the heptathlon. In the shot put, Robaweicz took second place with a season-best throw of 12.40m. On Saturday, he nabbed a personal-best 3.50m in the pole vault along with a PR of 3:09.50 in the 1000m. His final score of 32.53 earned him seventh place among the field. 

Alexander Korczynski took home a gold medal with a personal-best time of 4:08.31 in the one miler.

The Huskies will take advantage of some must needed rest before they travel to Brown on Feburary 17th.
