BOSTON – With the No. 13 Northeastern men's hockey team (16-9-1, 9-7-1) leading by a goal late in regulation, UConn (8-17-2, 3-12-2) tied it up with an extra attacker goal with 1:09 to play before Alexander Payusov ended it in overtime to give Connecticut the win, 3-2.
Zach Solow scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season in the loss, while captain
Eric Williams also scored for the visitors.
Cayden Primeau stopped 29 shots in goal.
UConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first period on Jachym Kondelik tucked home his fourth of the year, completing tic-tac-toe passing from Karl El-Mir and Roman Kinal when he was left alone in front of the net.
Northeastern leveled the game at one with a power play strike off the stick of Solow 6:15 into the middle frame after
Jeremy Davies drew two defenders towards him before dishing down to Solow on the doorstep, who buried it five-hole through UConn netminder Tomas Vomacka (31 saves) for the goal.
NU took its first lead of the night two minutes into the third period as
Grant Jozefek flew down the left side and around the net before throwing a no-look pass across the grain to a waiting Williams at the net front for his third of the season.
The score stayed that way until late in regulation when UConn pulled Vomacka in favor of the extra attacker. That's when Brian Rigali redirected a shot from Ruslan Iskhakov to knot the game at two with 1:09 left in regulation.
Connecticut then controlled the play in OT, outshooting NU 3-0 before Payusov took a feed from Kondelik and roofed a shot home for the game-winner.
Northeastern will regroup and get back to work in preparation of Monday's Beanpot title game against Boston College at TD Garden.
